This workbook contains the Timothy Training Course section of the book and is
designed as a study guide. It may be used in conjunction with the book or
separately to equip any faithful Christian to disciple another.
The aim is spiritual reproduction. We want to help you train another
Christian in such a way that he can pass the training on to yet another. We want
to teach you how to present the basic concepts in a clear and simple pattern.
The one learning will then be able to understand, apply and teach someone else
what he has learned. To accomplish this goal, we will present simple concepts
that are reinforced with repetition.
John Milton Gregory's classic book "The Seven Laws of Teaching" gives the
five stages, or levels, of learning:
1. Recognize I've heard this before.
2. Repeat parrot-like.
3. Give
it with your own illustrations and style.
4. Apply it and live it out.
5. Understand why so you can debate and defend it.
Telling is not teaching. It is not enough just to lecture and assume the
student has learned a particular truth. Unless one has reached level three or
four of learning, he cannot effectively teach it to others. Therefore, you will
be required to read the materials, memorize scriptural passages and do a Bible
study on the topics.
This procedure will help you increase the level of understanding of the
subject matter.
This course has eight lessons. An observant student will discover that the
first two lessons are rather deep. The remaining six lessons are easier.
Beginning with Lesson Three, you will be taught to use the material for a new
Christian.
When you want to teach a new baby Christian, you may begin with Lesson Three
on the plan of Salvation. Lesson Three introduces the "Bridge"illustraion,
Lesson Five the "Wheel" illustration and Lesson Six the "Hand" illustration.
Why depend so much on illustrations? Firstly, illustrations are a teaching
tool providing a clear pattern for a young Christian to follow. For example, a
young Christian could very quickly learn to present the Gospel by using the
"Bridge" illustration without too much difficulty. Secondly, illustrations help
to clarify truths. This will give you confidence in your teaching. Your audience
will also be less likely to get sidetracked. Jesus Himself used simple parables
and stories to explain deep truths of the Kingdom of God.
The memory verses are given in the New King James Version. If you desire to
memorize in another version, this is fine. However, we recommend you write out
the memory verses on cards and carry them with you so you can review them at
various times during the day.
Do not rush through the course. Do the Bible study lessons and Scripture
memory assignments faithfully. Sometime it may takes an extra week to cover the
lessons thoroughly. Do not be discouraged. Be patient. Be encouraged. God will
bless each sincere disciple.
