| The Gift: This is the introductory episode where we get to meet our favorite family, the Logan Clan. The Logans are a tight knit family in Lexington, Kentucky during the late 1800's. They raise horses and lead a life full of virtues, morals, and controversy. The head of the family, Ned Logan agrees to take in an orphan based on an old family tradition. The Logan family's "Legacy" is to help others less fortunate then they are. Ned feels that it is his duty to carry on this tradition that has been so important to the Logan family for generations. But Ned is in for a big surprise. He is expecting a 12 year old orphan from New York City, but when this orphan arrives in Lexington we see immediately that he is not who Ned believed him to be. Jeremy Bradford is a misguided seventeen year old from the big city. The life he knows is conflicting to the life that the Logans lead, and he has trouble adjusting to his new life in Lexington. Clay, the second eldest son of the Logan family immediately butts heads with the newest addition to the Logan clan, while the girls, Alice and Lexy, both attach to Jeremy. Lexy, the baby of the family, and Jeremy share a close relationship from the very start, and the seedings of a relationship between Alice and Jeremy begins to root. With his family cheering him on. Clay races his horse, Celtic Mist, and wins. Later while Lexy is teaching Jeremy how to ride, he falls off the horse, and the horse fractures it's leg. Clay and Jeremy have a fight, and the animosity between them grows deeper. Sean, the eldest son is engaged to Vivian Winters, but is not in love with her, but rather one of his fathers workers. Marita is a young African American woman and this relationship is very secret. He breaks off his engagement to Vivian Winters because of his love for Marita. This sets the roots for a feud between the Logans and the Winters, who are the richest and most prominent family in Kentucky. Jeremy encounters more trouble with the Logan family when he is accused of stealing a watch from William Winters, as only Ned believes him when he pleads his innocence. Sean announces his plans to leave Lexington. Later in the episode Sean's tobacco barn is set on fire, and Jeremy, who is in the process of running away sees this. The Logans fight the fire, and all agree to stay and work together to get the place back in order. The episode ends with a feeling that everything will work out okay. As Ned says, "It's gonna be a good year for the Logan family," and we have to stay tuned to see... |
