EARLY HISTORY

Spanish SoldierRiver

In 1806 Lieutenant Gabriel Moraga and a force of 30 men left the San Francisco Presidio and entered the valley over the Pacheco Pass. They crossed the San Joaquin River and came to a creek swarming with butterflies. He named the area The Mariposa (the butterflies). They continued northward and after a tiring journey over a hot almost treeless plain came upon a sparkling stream of water. It was such a welcome sight that Moraga named the stream EL RIO de Nuestra Senora de la Mercedes (River of Our Lady of Mercy).

The county of Merced (210,554 population) and the city of Merced (present population = 79,715; projected population for 2025 = 230,000) both took their names from the river, and the city of Merced was incorporated in 1889. In April of 1855, Merced County was formed out of the southwestern portion of Mariposa County. There were only 500 people living in the area at the time. The fast-growing city of Merced became the county seat during a special election in 1872. Livingston was also considered as location for the county seat. The city is 172 feet above sea level, 37.29 degrees north of the equator, and 120.48 degrees west of the prime meridian. Merced is a city of beautiful trees. In the spring, the fruit trees and flowering trees blossom, and in the fall, the turning of the foliage compares with a New England countryside.

MERCED TODAY

Merced MapWhen my family and I moved to Merced in 1969, it was basically a small rural town, but it was showing signs of growth. We moved here because I had just been hired by Merced Community College as a speech-English professor, and I enjoyed going to work each day because as a boy who was brought up in rural Arkansas, I could see the cows grazing in the pastures across from the college.

Merced County CourthouseOf course, Merced has changed through the years. Some of the hamburger stands are now Taco stands (although McDonalds, Carl's Junior, Jack-in-the-Box, and In-and-Out Burger are still thriving), and traffic is getting heavy at the corner of G Street and Olive Avenue. A large housing development has replaced the cotton and tomato fields by Black Rascal Creek, and 6,000 homes are being built on what used to be the Bellevue Ranch. University of California Merced is now an established university, with 875 students initially enrolled, but with 25,000 students expected eventually, and Merced College now has a tricenter complex, where UC, Cal State Stanislaus and Merced all have extension classes, and St. Patrick's Catholic Church, Yosemite Church, and Shepherd of the Valley Lutheran Church, as well as a large new Mormon meetinghouse have been built on Yosemite Avenue. We've gotten Albertson's, Save Mart, Orchard Hardware, Home Depot, Lowe's, Gottchalks, Best Buy, Linens 'N Things, Applebys, Walmart, Barnes and Noble Book Store, Circuit City, Starbucks, Quiznos, and a downtown Mainplace Theater to go along with Sears, Pennys, Parker's Hardware and the Regency Theater, so I guess we have arrived.

THE GATEWAY TO YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK

Yosemite

In 1996, Yosemite had more than 4 million visitors, making it the 13th most visited park in the National Park Service.

WaterfallMerced has been called the GATEWAY to Yosemite, since Highway 140 (which goes to Yosemite and is the all-weather route to the park) intersects with Highway 99 (which is a main north/south highway). Merced is 86 miles from the Arch Rock Entrance of the park via Highway 140. It is about an hour and a half or two hours to the park, depending on how many times you stop along the way to admire the scenery.

Yosemite truly is one of America's scenic wonders, and the waterfalls during the summer of 2000 were spectacular, since 1999-2000 was such a wet/snowfilled year in California.

THE TENTH UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA CAMPUS

UC BannerSung-Mo The UC Board of Regents chose the city of Merced as the site of the tenth UC campus. Opening in September, 2005 with 875 students, the campus is located on 2000 acres near beautiful Lake Yosemite, which is on the outskirts of Merced, and the campus, a part of an 11,000 acre community, will have sweeping vistas of the Sierra Nevada mountains. The campus has also been designated as a "high tech" campus, the first such major university campus to be built in the 21st century.

On 5-14-99, the campus inked a contract with National Park Services officials to establish a laboratory for research. With UC as a hub, scientists and educators will be able to use Yosemite, Sequoia, and Kings Canyon national parks as living laboratories to study environmental and other issues affecting the Sierra Nevada and the San Joaquin Valley.

On 1-16-07, a new chancellor was chosen by the UC Board of Regents for the UC Merced campus. Replacing Dr. Carol Tomlinson-Keasey, the initial UC Merced chancellor (see top left) was Sung-Mo "Steve" Kang, formerly of the engineering department at UC Santa Cruz (see above right).
