EDITORIAL RESPONSE

By Gary Gygax
THIS REPLY WAS SENT TO ME JUST A COUPLE OF DAYS AFTER MY "START OF IT ALL..." EDITORIAL.
GARY WAS KIND ENOUGH TO CORRECT A COUPLE OF MISTAKES IN MY WRITING, AND MADE A COUPLE OF COMMENTS ABOUT THE WoG SITUATION IN GENERAL.
GOT SOMETHING TO SAY ABOUT IT?
GO RIGHT AHEAD -
DROP ME A LINE.
OR, BETTER YET, WRITE TO
GARY GYGAX, THE INVENTOR OF DUNGEONS AND DRAGONS, HIMSELF!
Don Kaye borrowed $1,000 against a life insurance policy. The game consisted of 3 booklets, plus reference sheets, in a box to which front and spine labels had to be pasted by hand. It was equally popular with high school students and non-student gamers as well.

Well, initially the game suggested that Avalon Hill's
Outdoor Adventure mapboard be used for "wilderness adventures," and thus there was no world setting. Greyhawk came a couple of years after D&D was published, although my personal Greyhawk Campaign world began in 1972.

Don Kaye and Ernie were players only, so it was fun, not effort. Rob Kuntz contributed to the larger personal campaign world circa 1976 and after.

However, I created, designed and authored the
World of Greyhawk product all by myself, albeit with the inspiration of those I named.

About nostalgia... When the world was at its peak, so was the popularity of the AD&D game.

There are fewer players now than then, and maybe the lack of appeal of some other world settings might be contributive to the loss of popularity of AD&D.

Aside from the corrections noted, what can I say but (blush!) I am happy that what I attempted to provide has been understood and utilized by dedicated fellow RPGers. I hope I can be of further creative contribution to the Oerth in the not-too-distant future.
