DIAMANTINA, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Esplanada Address: Price: $4 Rating: Worst Reviewed: 1992 Review: Many cheap hotels around the bus terminal and this is one of them. Rooms are basic and dingy-looking and come with a sink and that’s about it. Not recommended! DIAS D’AVILA, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Suez Address: Av. Imbassai Price: $14.50 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1994 Review: Good hotel located 4 kms. ($.71 by city bus) from where the bus lets passengers off coming from the city of Alagoinhas and in the middle of the downtown (what very little downtown there is) area. Rooms are comfortable (beds are a little hard), fairly spacious, clean and come with color tv with remote control and fan. Amenities include a very small swimming pool. Lots of closet space. Recommended! Price includes breakfast. Drawback: 1) There’s no door knob outside of rooms so it makes closing the door rather difficult. 2) The toilet didn’t flush properly. 3) When sitting in the large green plastic chair, be careful! The one in my room broke when I sat down on it and I found myself sitting on the floor. DIVINOPOLIS, BRAZIL Name: Iris Hotel Address: Price: $12.50 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1995 Review: Adequate hotel located several blocks from the bus terminal (30 minute walk) and in the downtown area. Rooms are fairly spacious, not too clean (dust and carpet is dirty) and don’t come with really anything. However, the bathroom is especially spacious. If on a tight budget, there are rooms available without a private bathroom for $4.50 less per night. Friendly staff. Recommended! Price includes breakfast. DOIS CORREGOS, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Vanoni Address: pca. Maj. Carlos Neves 8 Price: $6.50 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1999 Review: Adequate hotel located several blocks from the bus terminal (15 minute walk) and in the immediate downtown area. Rooms are simple, clean, adequately sized (barely) and come with color tv and a fan. A nice touch is having your own balcony (seems to be the only one; lucky me!) overlooking a park. A very good value and can be recommended. Drawback: An occasional spider or two. DOLORES, ARGENTINA Name: Plaza Hotel Address: Price: $15 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1991 Review: Adequate hotel located near the bus terminal. Friendly staff. Recommended! Drawback: Shower was ready to fall apart. DOURADOS, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Bahamas Address: Price: $14 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1993 Review: Good hotel located a good distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($2.50) and four blocks from the downtown area. Rooms are simple, clean and come with air conditioning and color tv (cheaper without). Good value. Highly recommended. Price includes breakfast. DRACENA, BRAZIL Name: Palace Hotel Address: rua Edison Silveira Campos 1050 Price: $28 Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1999 Review: Good three star hotel located a good distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($3 - fair price!) and one block from the immediate downtown area. Rooms are fairly spacious, extremely comfortable, spotless and come with color tv (including HBO and HBO2) and air conditioning. A small but simple couch adds a nice touch to the room. Also, the hotel has its’ own swimming pool. Less expensive rooms are available for $22.50 without the air conditioning. Friendly and helpful staff. Highly recommended! Price includes breakfast. EL TOCUYO, VENEZUELA Name: Hotel Nazaret Address: Av. Fralernidad entre 7 y 8 Price: $3.50 Rating: Worst Reviewed: 1997 Review: Without a doubt, one of the worst hotels in the city. I really wanted to stay at the lovely and quaint Posada Colonial which was recommended by one of my travel guide books. When I arrived late in the afternoon, they were all filled up (the only good hotel in town!). When I asked in Spanish if there was another hotel nearby, they sent me to this fleabag of a hotel. And what a grubby hotel it is, too. Rooms are average size, dirty, shabby looking (paint peeling), musty smelling, cobwebs and come with a small fan. This is definitely a hole in the wall and not recommended in the least. I’m very surprised that this city of over 44,000 people has only one suitable hotel to speak of. EL VIGIA, VENEZUELA Name: Hotel Gran Sasso Address: Price: $18 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1997 Review: Adequate hotel (nothing special) located a good distance from the downtown area and the bus terminal by taxi ($2 - reasonable price). Rooms are spacious, almost spotless (except for the ants!) and come with color tv and air conditioning. Friendly staff. While waiting for a cab when departing the hotel, someone at the reception desk gave me a cup of coffee with a friendly smile. This hotel is still recommended but I would be a little more enthusiastic about doing so it if were closer to the downtown area. However, I guess none of the other two hotels that this city has to offer is located downtown, either. ENCANTADO, VENEZUELA Name: DeMarco Hotel Address: Av. Julio de Castilhos 1120 Price: $17.50 Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1997 Review: Excellent hotel located a few short blocks from the bus terminal and right on the main shopping street of the downtown area. Rooms are fairly spacious, spotless, comfortable and come with color tv, piped-in music (a nice touch!) and a fan. Helpful staff. Highly and warmly recommended! Price includes breakfast. ENSENADA, CHILE Name: Cabanas Brisas del Lago Address: Price: $39 Rating: Best Reviewed: 1990 Review: Excellent cabins located right next to a beautiful lake and overlooking Osorno Volcano. The inside of the cabin is clean, spacious and tastefully decorated. Highly recommended! ERECHIM, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Parenti Address: Av. Mauricio Cardosa 128 Price: $19 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1996 Review: Good and adequate hotel located a good distance from the bus terminal (35 minute walking time each way - or, better yet, take a taxi for $5) and in the immediate downtown area. Rooms are simple, clean, somewhat small and don’t come with really anything. However, it’s worth mentioning that the bed is extremely comfortable. All in all, recommended. Price includes breakfast. Travel Tip: If traveling to Erechim by bus, it’s worth noting that the city has two bus terminals which are right next to each other. One bus terminal handles transportation within the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The other bus terminal handles transportation only for the states of Parana and Santa Catarina. ESTANCIA, BRAZIL Name: Turismo Hotel Estanciano Address: Prca. Br. do Rio Branco 176 Price: $24 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1994 Review: Good hotel located a very short distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($6 - too high! - it can easily be walked) and right in the immediate downtown area. Rooms are spotless and come with a frigo bar, color tv and air conditioning. They have less expensive rooms available but the hotel “claimed” to have been out of those types of rooms. The bed is a bit uncomfortable. All in all, still recommended! Price includes breakfast. ESTRELA, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Polartur Address: rua 20 de Maio 375 Price: $51.50 Rating: Best Reviewed: 1996 Review: Excellent three star hotel located a good distance from the bus terminal (allow at least 50 minutes walking time each way - or, better yet, take a taxi for $6) and several blocks from the downtown area. Rooms are clean, comfortable, extremely spacious and come with air conditioning, color tv and a well-stocked frigo bar. Most rooms (mine included) have the added advantage of having a very spacious balcony (even if it’s just facing a side street). The service of the hotel is excellent. If your travel plans take you to the city of Estrela, give yourself a treat and stay in this upscale hotel. Highly recommended! Price includes breakfast. Travel Tip: Since there aren’t any restaurants nearby, you might want to consider eating at the one in the hotel. Food is excellent and the prices are reasonable. However, the service is very slow. EUNOPOLIS, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Brasil Italia Address: rua Floriano Peixota 90 Price: $30 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1994 Review: Good hotel located a short distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($6 - too high!) and close to the downtown area. Rooms are comfortable, spotless, fairly spacious and come with a frigo bar, color tv and air conditioning. There are rooms available for $2.50 less without the color tv and frigo bar. Also, the room has lots of closet space and a writing desk. This hotel is still recommended even though I found a cockroach skimmering across my breakfast table. Price includes breakfast. Drawback: The air conditioning in the room initially has to be turned on from the lobby. |
