FARROUPILHA, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Concatto Address: Price: $18 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1992 Review: Good hotel located within walking distance from the bus terminal and the center of town. Rooms are spotless and come with color tv and a frigo bar. Very pleasant location. Recommended! Price includes breakfast. FAZENDA NOVA, BRAZIL Name: Grande Hotel Address: Av. Poeta Carlos Pena Filho Price: $22.50 Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1994 Review: Very good hotel located directly across the street from where the bus stops and within walking distance from the center of town. Rooms are spotless, fairly spacious and come with a good sized bed, frigo bar and air conditioning (a welcome relief in this hot and dusty town). The hotel has more expensive rooms available with the lunch included in the price of the room. A nice touch is the very beautiful garden that surrounds the hotel. Amenities include a good sized swimming pool for adults and a wading pool for the kids. Friendly and helpful staff. Highly recommended! Price includes breakfast. FEIRA DE SANTANA, BRAZIL Name: Subae Hotel Address: Av. Presidente Dutra 564 Price: $24 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1994 Rewiew: There are several hotels around the bus terminal and this may very well be one of the better ones. Good hotel located a block from the bus terminal and several blocks from the downtown area. Rooms are comfortable, spotless and come with air conditioning (much needed!), frigo bar and color tv with remote control. Recommended! Price includes breakfast. Drawback: 1) I saw ants in the sugar bowl when I had breakfast in the restaurant. 2) Not the friendliest hotel I’ve stayed at, that’s for sure. 3) There’s a sign posted in the lobby stating that the hotel will give you a 20% discount on the price of the room. However, the hotel gave me (for whatever reason) only a 10% discount. FERNANDOPOLIS, BRAZIL Name: Sotam Hotel Address: rua Brasil 954 Price: $14 Rating: Best Value Reviewed: 1999 Review: Good but simple hotel located a good distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($3.50 - fair price!) and in the immediate downtown area. Rooms are fairly spacious, spotless and come with color tv with remote control, air conditioning and a frigo bar. If you’re fortunate enough to get a room on the top floor (as I was), you’ll get a splendid view of the city. Friendly and helpful staff. An excellent value and very much recommended. Price includes breakfast. FLORES DE CUNHA, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Florio Address: Price: $18 Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1998 Review: In this peaceful and picturesque town of 20,000, there are only two hotel choices (this one and the more plain Hotel Trattoria di Trento) but neither are, unfortunately, located right in town. Very good hotel located approximately eight blocks from the bus terminal and the downtown area. The hotel is situated peacefully alongside a highway. Rooms are clean, comfortable, extremely spacious and come with color tv. What makes this hotel truly special, however, is that most rooms (mine included) have a good size balcony in which to watch the traffic whizzing by. Especially calming at night. Highly recommended! Price includes breakfast. Travel Tip: At the main plaza in the downtown area is a georgeous pink church. It’s certainly one of the most beautiful churches that I have ever seen. FORMOSA, ARGENTINA Name: Hotel Colon Address: Price: $18 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1991 Review: Adequate hotel located within walking distance from the bus terminal. Rooms are basic but clean. Friendly staff. Recommended! FRANCA, BRAZIL Name: Trajano Palace Hotel Address: Price: $19.50 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1993 Review: Good hotel located a good distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($5) and the downtown area and actually is in a suburb of the city. Rooms are clean and come with color tv and frigo bar. Cannot be recommended for the reasons listed in Drawback. Price includes breakfast. Drawback: 1) The hotel is too far from the downtown area and too inconvenient to get to. 2) The reception clerk was indifferent and when I arrived at 11 o’clock at night, he kept me waiting while he chatted on the phone. 3) Finally, the night I arrived there apparently was some big sporting event going on and the lobby was filled with individuals watching the big “event” on tv. In the midst of the enthusiastic cheering going on, it made sleeping very difficult. FREDERICO WESTPHALEN, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Cantelle Address: rua do Comercio 740 Price: $12 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1998 Review: As far as I know, there are only a couple of hotels to choose from in this city of 25,000 and both are within close proximity to one another. The Hotel Cantelle is located uphill from the bus terminal on the main shopping street and almost directly across from the more upscale Hotel Palace. The price paid for the particular room that I stayed in was for the basic necessities (bed, bathroom and sink). There are more expensive rooms available for $20, $30, $35 and $40 respectively. I imagine for the higher price ones, you would get such things as additional space, air conditioning and tv. However, if you’re trying to save money (and who isn’t these days?) and don’t mind that it gets stuffy without so much as a fan then this room might be suitable for an overnight stay. There’s a window to open but, unfortunately, then mosquitoes become a problem. All in all, still recommended. Drawback: My room number was 43. I got confused and thought that the room next to mine was my room. I entered the room next to mine (room 44) when I realized quickly that I was in the wrong room and abruptly left. I became mortified when I came to the startling conclusion that if my room key could open another guest’s room, then that key could probably open the door to my room. FRUTAL, BRAZIL Name: Plaza Hotel Address: av. Euvaldo Lodi 600 Price: $20 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1999 Review: Good hotel located a good distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($3-excellent price!) and several blocks from the downtown area. Rooms are spacious, spotless and come with color tv, air conditioning and a frigo bar. Helpful staff. Recommended! Price includes breakfast. FRUTILLAR, CHILE Name: Hotel Frutillar Address: Price: $37.00 Rating: Best Reviewed: 1990 Review: Excellent hotel built on stilts above the lake. Friendly and helpful staff. One female desk clerk speaks fluent English. |
