GARANHUNS, BRAZIL Name: Parque Hotel Address: Price: $3.50 Rating: Worst Reviewed: 1994 Review: There are two cheap hotels across from the bus terminal and this is one of them. This hotel is located a short distance from the downtown area. Rooms are cramped, shabby and. surprisingly (from what I can tell), clean. Still, this hotel is primarily for the financially desperate. Not recommended in the least. Drawback: spiders. GARCA, BRAZIL Name: Grande Hotel Address: rua Manoel Fernandes 33 Price: $14 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1999 Review: Okay hotel located four blocks from the bus terminal and just a couple of blocks from the downtown area. Rooms are simple, adequately sized, clean and come with color tv (certainly the smallest set I’ve ever seen in my many years of travels). The best hotel that this city of 41,000 has to offer (which isn’t saying much). However, there are two other hotel choices that are best avoided. Overall, this hotel isn’t too bad and can be recommended. Price includes breakfast. GARIBALDI, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Mosteiro Sao Jose Address: Price: $9 Rating: Best Value Reviewed: 1992 Review: A very charming and quaint hotel that used to be a monastery run by some very friendly nuns. The hotel sits on a hill overlooking the beautiful town of Garibaldi and located a short distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($1.50). Rooms are spotless and spacious. Recommended! Price includes breakfast. Advisary: There’s a beautiful garden located on the grounds but it might be best to keep the windows closed at all times due to an over abundance of bees. GAROPABA, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Garopaba Address: Price: $24 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1993 Review: In this tourist town of 10,000, hotel prices tend to be somewhat on the high side. However, this is a fair two star hotel located within walking distance from the bus terminal or a very short taxi ride ($3) and one block from the beach. Rooms are fairly clean (although it could be dusted a bit more) and come with color tv and air conditioning. Recommended primarily for its close location to the beach. Price includes breakfast. Drawback: Pesky and noisy mosquitoes at night. GOIAS, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Araguaia Address: av. Dr. Deusdete Ferreira de Moura 8 Price: $10 Rating: Best Value Reviewed: 1995 Review: Okay hotel located a short distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($5) and fairly close to the downtown area. Rooms are fairly spacious, clean and come with a fan. The room has its own bathroom which is highly unusual for an inexpensive hotel. Recommended! Price includes breakfast. GOIAS, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Vila Boa Address: av. Dr. Deusdete Ferreira de Moura Price: $53 Rating: Best Reviewed: 1995 Review: Truly a world class hotel! Excellent three star hotel located a short distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($5), near the downtown area and situated peacefully on top of a hill. Rooms are very comfortable, spotless, spacious and come with color tv, frigo bar and air conditioning. Most rooms (mine included) have a balcony overlooking the city below with a spectacular view. The grounds that the hotel sits on is very picturesque. Amenities include a large swimming pool. Service is excellent. Very inexpensive laundry service with fast turn around time which is highly unusual for an upscale hotel. If your travels take you to the colonial city of Goias and you want a splurge, this hotel lets you do it in style. One person on the staff speaks English. Highly recommended! Travel Tip: 1) The restaurant in the hotel is worth trying. Scrumpious tasting food at reasonable prices with attentive service. 2) In the center of town, there are numerous handicraft stores with items for sale at very reasonable prices. GRAMADO, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Serra Azul Address: Price: $78 Rating: Best Reviewed: 1992 Review: Truly a world class hotel! Excellent five star hotel located in the center of town and within walking distance from the bus terminal. Rooms are spacious, spotless and come with color tv and frigo bar. Extras in the bathroom include a hair dryer and telephone. Amenities include a swimming pool, tennis court, sauna and a beauty parlor. Service is excellent. English spoken by one person. Highly recommended! Price includes breakfast. GRAVATA, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Centro Gravata Address: BR322 (p.Recife) Km 82, 2 km Price: $19 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1994 Review: Very pleasant two star hotel (it’s really more like a motel) located a short distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($6 - too high! - the cabs here don’t have meters) and a good distance from the downtown area. Rooms are simple, spotless, fairly spacious and come with a fan, a small table and two chairs. There are more expensive rooms available that are a bit more spacious that include a frigo bar and telephone. Not really recommended for its inconvenient location and the drawbacks listed below. Price includes breakfast. drawback: 1) At night, mosquitoes are a problem at this hotel. One mosquito kept me up all night long with its’ constant buzzing sound. 2) Roosters crowing at 4 a.m. GUAIRA, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Itaipu Address: Price: $3 Rating: Worst Reviewed: 1993 Review: In this hot and dumpy border town (bordering with Paraguay), there are few hotel choices of any kind. Very shabby hotel located across from the bus terminal and three blocks from the center of town. Rooms are very basic, smell bad and have large cockroaches. Unless one is severely limited on funds, one should seek accommodations elsewhere. Definitely a hotel to avoid. Advisary: You might want to consider skipping this town altogether because it doesn’t have a lot going for it. GUANARE, VENEZUELA Name: Hotel Italia Address: Carrera No 19-50 Price: $15.50 Rating: Best Value Reviewed: 1997 Review: Good hotel (the best that this city has to offer) located a short distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($2 - very reasonable price!), in the immediate downtown area and one block from the main shopping street. Rooms are spotless, spacious and come with air conditioning and color tv. Very economical and a good value. Highly recommended! Drawback: The elevator doesn’t always work. GUAPORE, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Top Gigio Address: Av. Mons. Scalabrini 928 Price: $12 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1998 Review: A couple of basic hotels in this city of 20,000 and this is one of them. However, this hotel isn’t too bad as far as basic hotels go. Adequate hotel located a few short blocks from the bus terminal and in the center of town. Rooms are clean, basic, adequately sized and come with black and white tv. Recommended! Price includes breakfast. Advisary: There’s another hotel not far from this one called Hotel Central. Judging from the outside of it, it might not be wise to stay there. GUARAPUAVA, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Marcos Address: Price: $12 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1995 Review: Good and adequate hotel conveniently located a few short blocks from the bus terminal and a good distance from the downtown area of this city of 160,000. The hotel is actually adjacent to a gas station and there is no visible name of the hotel on the outside. Rooms are simple, spotless and come with a small writing desk and chair. Good budget choice and especially when considering it’s the only hotel within walking distance from the bus terminal. Very much recommended! Price includes breakfast. GUARATINGUETA, BRAZIL Name: Kafe Hotel Address: Price: $27 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1993 Review: Good two star hotel located a short distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($2.50) and in the downtown area. Rooms are simple, clean (except for the carpet) and come with a balcony (some overlooking a beautiful church). Limited English spoken. Recommended! Price includes breakfast. GUARATUBA, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Cabana Suica Address: Price: $19 Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1992 Review: Good two star hotel located a good distance from the bus terminal by taxi ($5) and one block from the beach. Rooms are comfortable, clean and come with color tv (only one channel) and air conditioning. Recommended! Price includes breakfast. GUARUJA, BRAZIL Name: Hotel Rio Address: Price: $30 Rating: Mediocre Reviewed: 1992 Review: In this sophisticated and expensive resort city of 207,000 (just an hour’s drive from Sao Paulo), there is a shortage of hotels for the budget minded individual but this seems to be one of the more moderately priced ones. This hotel is centrally located in the heart of the city and only a block from the beach. Rooms are comfortable, clean and come with color tv and ceiling fan. Recommended! Price includes breakfast. HORCON, CHILE Name: Residencial Aranciba Address: Price: $11.50 Rating: Honorable Mention Reviewed: 1990 Review: Very nice residencial located right at the beach and within walking distance from the center of town. Rooms are basic but clean and come with a superb view of the ocean. The owner speaks fluent English as he lived for a numbers of years in Miami but now prefers the simpler life. Highly recommended! Travel Tip: Horcon is a beautiful and tiny fishing village worth visiting. HUASCO, CHILE Name: House (for rent) Address: Price: $16 Rating: Best value Reviewed: 1990 Review: Adequate and spacious house to rent. Drawback: No electricity (makes it especially difficult at night). |
