OCUMARE DE LA COSTA, VENEZUELA
Name: Hotel Montemar
Address:
Price: $25
Rating: Mediocre
Reviewed: 1997
Review: Ocumare de la Costa is a tiny beach town and a little
touristy, located only two and a half hours by a rickety old
  bus from
Maracay. A few inexpensive hotels of sorts and
this seems to be the best one this town has to offer (which
isn’t saying much). Barely adequate hotel located both a few
blocks from the center of town and where the official bus
stop is. It’s only a couple of blocks from the beach. Rooms
are fairly spacious and come with air conditioning and that’s
about it. The floors aren’t the cleanest and the ugly green
walls are all dirty and marked up. The room also has a
nauseating smell of bug spray. Barely recommended but
might be okay for an overnight stay.
Advisary: You might want to think twice before coming to this town.
Since I was without a car, I took a rickety old bus from the
  busy
Maracay bus terminal. Maybe about a half hour or so
out of town, the military stopped the bus and told everyone
to get off. They had us form two lines. One line was for women
and children and the other for men. Then they asked (in
Spanish, of course) to see our documentation. In my case,
this meant showing my passport. The military armed guards
then proceeded to go through all of our personal belongings.
I wondered what they were looking for. The people on the
bus, including myself, didn’t exactly look like a bunch of
  terrorists.
Finally, after they searched and found nothing on any of us, we
were allowed to reboard the bus and continue along our way.
After another half hour or so, the bus stops again. Apparently,
the bus driver forgot to fill up the gas tank before leaving the
bus terminal and we had to wait for another bus to come by
and pick us up. It was more trouble than what it was worth
  coming to this town.

Review: In this small town there are plenty of inexpensive hotels to
choose from and this is one of them. Good hotel located
within walking distance from the bus terminal and the center
of town. Rooms are simple and fairly clean (even though
the paint is peeling from the walls and the carpet needs
  shampooing). Recommended! Price includes breakfast.

OURINHOS, BRAZIL

Address: rua Amornio Prado 38
Price: $12
Rating: Mediocre

Review: Adequate hotel conveniently located a couple of blocks from
the bus terminal and several blocks from the downtown area.
The hotel is actually located over a very cheap restaurant
facing a park across the street. Rooms are simple, clean
and very spacious. Barely recommended. Price includes
  breakfast.
Drawbacks:
  1) Not all of the rooms have room numbers on them.
Therefore, make a mental note of where your room is
       located.
  2) You may find a small but harmless lizard in your room.
Advisary: The hotel is located in a poorer area of the city. Be especially
careful if venturing out at night.

Review: Dumpy hotel located a short distance from the bus terminal
by taxi ($4 - fair price!) and near the downtown area. Rooms
are small, dumpy, shabby (although miraculously pretty
clean), and come with one of the most uncomfortable beds
that I’ve had the misfortune of sleeping on. The bathroom is
located down the hall. This hotel is definitely only for the
financially hard up. Best avoided if at all possible. Not
recommended in the least. Price includes breakfast.
Drawbacks:
  1) Some of the drawbacks include a broken window, worms,
flies, cobwebs, dirty and grimy walls, ect.
  2) The commual bathroom is a disgrace.
Advisary: There’s a drastic shortage of good hotels in the city. In fact,
they have only one decent one and they “claimed” to have
been filled up at the time of my visit.
