Historic Bedford Street

In July of 2002, We were visiting a relative staying in a home owned by a long time family friend in Ellerslie, MD. We stayed in my Uncle's house in a 5 X 9 room sharing a twin bed. We met up with a couple who had been a friend to the family for several years and who are heavily into the flea market business. My uncle was helping them restore several buildings in the historic district of downtown Cumberland. To make a long story short, Pat and Pauline Gibson, showed us the duplex on Bedford Street and while completely buried in trash and debris and overgrown with strangling weeds and vines, we decided that we had to have it. Century 21 was the realtor. The attorney sat with $17,000 in cash for months. In September 2002, we were finally able to close and start the clean-up effort. As soon as we began work, the city inspector visited us. The neighbors were already telling us that the property was looking better than it had in years. The inspector had stopped to tell us to move an old chair from the sidewalk and then took a quick tour of the property. He had only good things to say because the county and city had been getting complaints about the trash for years. |

Bedford Street. During May and June 2003, approx. 300,000 gallons of spring water flowed over and under the Duplex. We used the water to make a double fountain with water hieghts of over 7 feet.
