Journal Quilts
These quilts were made for the special exhibit "A Page From My Book" shown at the International Quilt Festival in Houston in October, 2002. Each is 8.5" x 11". I made one each month for 9 months, beginning in January, 2002.

The only theme tying each quilt to the others was to respond in some way to my surroundings in that month. I used these quilts to explore the use of different media and techniques. Some were successful artistically, some not, but each taught me something.

January - Oregon
It has rained for 37 consecutive days. The sun is a pale circle in the sky. I am trying out the heat-set pastels on fabric and using silver metallic thread. The pastels are difficult to control. I encounter problems using the silver thread on my machine, so I stitch it on by hand after the machine stitching with regular thread is done.
February - Colorado
Walking along the river, I noticed the beautiful lines created by the cracking ice. I used the heat-set pastels again and fused applique. I used the pastels much more lightly this time and spritzed them with water for a slightly speckled look.
March - Colorado
The high altitude makes me so sleepy. I sleep long and well in Colorado. Outside the snow softly falls. The image is my own face, which I scanned and printed on treated fabric. I manipulated the color in Photoshop and added the soft snow falling. My hair looks like blowing snow. I quilted with little x-shaped tacks instead of a traditional quilting stitch.
April - Oregon
I bought Jean Ray Laury's book on stamping and had to try it. I carved a rubber stamp which I used on the green fabric and I used a carved wooden stamp from India for the rust fabric. The spring colors in Portland are an amazing combination of yellow greens, blue sky and rich, wet earth. When I washed the green fabric a lot of the stamped fabric paint washed out--a happy accident. I like the faded images better than the original, sharper images.
