Deadline: M-Bags are sent when they reach 35 pounds or more... about every 3 months or so. When BC'ers send books for the M-Bag they are journaled as being received by me. Then relase notes are made when the M-bag is actually sent. The USWCF members, then journal them (about three months later) when they arrive in Denmark. Once read, they are available for other English speaking folks or set free in the wild in Denmark. We have hooked up other English speaking BC'ers with the USWCF to get books on the available list.

Country: Kenya
Recipients: Top Ride Academy in Kajaido Kenya. They are for girls ages 4 or 5 through 15 to 17.
Organizer: peacebird5
Books requested: "They need all kinds of schoolbooks and other appropriate books. Inappropriate books are those that describe or show too much "stuff," which they just can't relate to, such as a picture of a room overflowing with toys and books, or how to do crafts (no supplies available there). Appropriate books are simple ones and educational ones. Books on subjects are good; animals, trees, math, HEALTH (big HIV crisis), English, dictionaries, reference books, science, history (not just of the USA), etc."
"The organizer tells me that they love children's "golden books" and any step books, because they may be learning english at an older age and would be interested in easy reads but with more complicated subject matter (Like a really easy book on Helen Keller, for example)."
Deadline: This is an ongoing collection. Each time the bag reaches 66 pounds it will be mailed.
Other notes: Donations toward postage are appreciated but not required. You can email peacebird5 with peacebird5 at comcast dot net.

Country: Nepal
Recipients: Shree Mangal Dvip Boarding School (SMD) in Katmandu, Nepal
Organizer: peacebird5
Books requested: "There is a revolution in the county right now and life there is very hard. The children at this school are not only educated, but are protected from the violence going on. The girls are at risk for being stolen and sold into prostitution rings in other countries, and the boys are stolen to be soldiers in the Maoist revolutionary army. The director of the school is very excited about getting an M-bag. She says, 'Yahooo!!!! More books! I'm trying to build both libraries (at the main school and at the Branch School for Small Monks). I think we've finally got our mid-age kids (10 to 14 years) reading independently/for fun.'"
Deadline: This is an ongoing collection. Each time the bag reaches 66 pounds it's mailed.
Other notes: Donations toward postage are appreciated.

Other notes: Thread about this M-bag

Country: Portugal - MAILED
Recipients: Virgulina
Organizer: tomatolady

Country: Ukraine
Recipients: a friend of solittletime's who is in the Peace Corps
Organizer: solittletime
Books Requested: "Now that I think of it, we here could use an M-bag of books for the following purpose: to give away as "rewards" for students at our Institute who come to a certain number of English Club meetings during the course of the next school year.
"The students are aged 18-21 or so. Some of them definitely read sophisticated literary fiction--but we wouldn't be looking for that, but rather for easy recreational reading.
"We could use readable, contemporary, fairly short popular fiction: John Grisham, Dick Francis, Sue Grafton, Sarah Graves, Stephen King (his books are long but people love him here), Agatha Christie (she's not contemporary but she's a real favorite here), Tony Hillerman, John D. MacDonald, Norah Roberts, Danielle Steel...
"We don't need "new" books. As long as the books are intact and not awfully beat up, they will be appreciated. It will also be fine if the books have BookCrossing stickers. But can you put the stickers inside and not on the front covers?"

FAQ

What's an M-bag?

Who are M-bags open to?
M-bags are sent from the United States, to recipients at a single address in an eligible country. To see if an M-bag can be shipped to a particular country, visit this page, select the country, and look for "Economy Mail Direct Sack to One Addressee - M-Bags" and you can find the rate for an M-bag composed of only books. For most countries, the rate is about $.90-$1 per pound. If you know how much your M-bag will weigh, the USPS website has a postage calculator for international bulk mail. Click on "Calculate Postage," then "Calculate International Postage," then "Calculate Volume Discount Mail," then "International Volume Discount Mail." Unfortunately I'm having difficulty creating a link directly to the postage calculator as it just gives me an error page when I link to it.

Why should I donate to an M-bag instead of just sending the book directly?
The short answer is, it can save you money. Let's take a 1 pound package to, say, Australia as an example (why? because it's close to the top of the list alphabetically and I'm lazy). If you send it directly, it costs $4.05 for economy mail.
But if you first send it to the M-bag organizer, that's $1.42 media rate + $1 for that pound of M-bag = $2.42. This can save lots of money overall if there are lots of books going to one person.

I'm organizing an M-bag - how do I get my info on this page?
PM me with any of the following information you have:
What country is it going to.
Who the recipient(s) of the books will be. (BC name if members)
Who is in charge of the M-bag. (If someone wants to donate, who should they PM?)
What types of books are requested.
Any other helpful information i.e. deadline for mailing books to the organizer; are contributions for postage requested, required, or not needed (amounts?); anything else contributors would need to know
