Odd Facts & Other Stuff

This site originally began as me collecting the month and year of release of MVS titles, although gathering CD information was much simpler, became more intriguing and covered something I so love, thus the site is what is. The MVS release list was something in which I was fairly interested for conversational as well as comparative reasons. One can still find my old post about it on the BBS at neo-geo.com under "Suggestions." See how sidetracked I got over time?

Is that all I have to say here? Certainly not! My would-have-been major contributor has moved to Japan, therefore this section won't grow as quickly as it would have, but I still have some things of interest to write on this page, so check back once in a while. I'll try to babble about interesting things like how the Rurouni Kenshin fighting game eventually became The Last Blade, tell you about what martial art Kyokugenryu Karate was based on & outline the differences, maybe provide some historical notes as they relate to KOF & Samurai Shodown, post up a World Heroes info file.... things like that and whatever else that ought to be posted on this section of the site. Until then, enjoy what's here.

SNK had three main series: Art of Fighting, Fatal Fury and its extension, The King of Fighters. These three series have common characters in addition to sharing some storyline aspects, as we all know. What some of you may not know however, is the true chronological order of the games. While Fatal Fury was the first out, that's not where it all began. Instead, it goes like this:

Art of Fighting
Art of Fighting 2
Fatal Fury
Fatal Fury 2
The King of Fighters '94
Fatal Fury 3
The King of Fighters '95
Real Bout Fatal Fury
Art of Fighting 3
The King of Fighters '96
The King of Fighters '97

So if you want the full & proper storyline, complete with failed attempts at re-writing history, play the games in this order. From rescuing Yuri from the clutches of Mr Big and his Southtown toughs to re-sealing Orochi, this is how the world of SNK was meant to be experienced.

-Dip settings sheets exist for all games except V-Liner.
-The Magical Drop 2 kit includes an AOU Show sticker and a fold-out pamphlet which essentially is a copy of the home cartridge instruction booklet. Japanese kits had yet another bonus sticker as well.
-The King of the Monsters 2 sticker seems to have been found only with Japanese kits thus far, so anyone with an English sticker is welcome to speak up.
-The fourth World Heroes Perfect sticker is Japanese-only.

Last December or so I got a little bored and wound up making a desktop wallpaper thenceforth intended to be offered to all of you. So, here is the result: A Twinkle Star Sprites wallpaper to decorate your computer with. (right-click and Save As to get this)

SNK, being of one of the best, was no stranger to advertizing to the millions: On television. Apart from what's confirmed on the video page, SNK did in fact promote other games, even its non-fighters believe it or not. Like what? See below. This comes directly from NEO·GEO FREAK (12/1997), with a little extra from the All About SNK history book.

The Magical Drop games are some of the best puzzlers ever created, yet they are sparsely covered on the internet. Here therefore courtesy of some 1997 issue of NEO·GEO FREAK along with personal discovery is one effort to alter the sad fact.

MAGICAL DROP 2

-Hidden Characters
In Magical Drop II, highlight each character in the below order then hit down after doing so. (Figure 1) That is, highlight The Fool, hit down. Then The Magician, hit down... until you get through everyone. Essentially you just follow the tarot numbers in ascending order to unlock The Devil, The Strength and The Empress (Figure 2).

-The Black Clown
If you're out for a match against The Black Clown, no codes are required. What it takes, is skill. Get a perfect run through the game and you will square off against this hidden boss (Figure 3).

Figure 1 Figure 2

Figure 3

MAGICAL DROP III

-Hidden Characters
At the character select screen in Magical Drop III, highlight any character (except World). When the timer matches the number above them, hit "C" thrice (Figure 4). Ex. Highlight Justice and when the timer is on 11, hit the "C" button 3 times and only 3 times -no more no less. For returning characters, notice that the numbers do match their MDII tarot numbers. Now demolish opponents with Hermit, Moon, Hanged Man, Temperance, Tower and Fortune.

For male Strength, hold "C" then choose young Strength with the A or B buttons (Figure 5).

-Selecting Colours
As an aside, selecting a character with the A button will result in player-1 colours for whom you have chosen, and player-2 colours for all computer opponents, whereas confirming your choice with the B button will have the opposite effect.

Figure 4 Figure 5

-The Secret Stages
Moon, Hanged Man and Black Pierrot are all secret characters, thus combatting any of the three entails getting to secret stages.

To do battle with Moon, you must defeat your first six opponents (Devil, Lovers, Justice, Star, Fool, Hermit) less than 60 seconds total (Figure 6).

For the rare opportunity to combat Hanged Man, at least 300 seconds must have elapsed over your previous six wins (Devil, Justice, Emperor, Fool/Chariot, Death, Hermit) (Figure 7). If you have been playing more than 30 seconds but less than 300 seconds after Hermit's defeat, you will see not Moon nor Hanged Man.

Finally, to joust with Black Pierrot (ie. to lose (Figure 8)) you must have a score of at least 150,000 points after your tenth match (Strength/World/Empress). View the chart below to see when you would face this terror, or if you're lucky, when you would skip him.

Figure 6 Figure 7

Figure 8

-The Character Order
As for the character order, everyone begins at Devil. Every lefthand arrow on the chart is the path you would follow should you take more than 40 seconds to fell your opponent. 40 seconds or less, and you follow the righthand arrow. Straight arrows of course indicate that you have no choice as to whom your next opponent shall be.

Light At The End Of The Tunnel

Remember the old days, where you got these "secret endings", or complete bonuses for finishing the game say without continuing? Often times what that was, was the Staff Roll, which since then has been a give away rather than a prize. Here for you though, is a growing list -as I'm sure I don't have them all- of games with either Staff Rolls, or special endings. But which game offers what treat? That is for you adventurers to discover.

Say What?

For those of you with un-modified cartridge consoles, you may have been wondering at times "will this game or that play in my language of choice?" without any real way of knowing in advance. So take look here, and decide if, as per your future NGH purchases, an alternate nationality system or a debug BIOS chip may also be awaiting you down the road.

I'm pretty sure there are some mistakes in these charts at this stage so stay tuned for updates and if you yourself can correct any erroneous info below, mail me and let me know. Last updated 02/10/2002 @ 11:21 p.m.
