ALIENS (1986)
MORGAN'S RATING
In this sequel to the Ridley Scott-directed 1979 cult classic chiller Alien, The only survivor of the Nostromo, Ripley, is discovered in deep sleep half a century later by a salvage ship. When she is taken back to Earth, she learns that a human colony was founded on the same planet where the aliens were first found. After contact with the colony is lost, she finds herself sent back to the planet along with a team of warriors bent on destroying the alien menace forever, and saving any survivors -- if any remain.

FACTS
RELEASE DATE: July 18th, 1986 (USA)
BOX OFFICE OPENING: $10.0 million (USA)
BOX OFFICE RESULT: $81.8 million (USA)
BUDGET: $18.5 million (USA)
- One of the sets was kept intact after filming. It was later used as the Axis Chemicals set for
Batman (1989).
- A draft of the script hd Gorman being paralyzed by a stinger on the tail of an alien, rather than being clobbered by falling equipment.
- Michael Biehn's character gets bitten on the hand by another character. This happens to him in every
James Cameron movie he's in -- also in The Terminator and The Abyss.
- The special edition includes extra scenes: Newt's parents discovering abandoned alien ship on LV-426, scenes of Ripley discussing her daughter, Hudson bragging about his weaponry, robot sentry guns repelling first alien raid, Hicks and Ripley exhanging first names. Also included in a scene on LV-426 where a child rides a low-slung tricycle similar to the one ridden in the original
The Terminator.
- The mechanism used to make the face-huggers thrash about in the stasis tubes in the science lab came from one of the 'flying piranhas' in Cameron's earlier
Piranha II: The Spawning. It took 9 people to make the face-hugger work; one person for each leg and one for the tail.
- Hicks was originally played by James Remar, but Michael Biehn replaced him a few days after principal photography began, due to "artistic differences" between Remar and Cameron.
- Only six aliens suits were used. The appearance of hundreds of aliens is simply clever editing and planning.
- Winner of two Academy Awards for Best Visual Effects and Best Sound Effects Editing. Also, nominated for Best Actress, Best Art-Direction, Best Filming Editing, Best Original Score and Best Sound.
[Pulling out his pump-action shotgun.]
Hicks: I like to keep this handy for close encounters.
Hudson: They're coming outta the walls. They're coming outta the goddamn walls!
[To Queen Alien who's about to grab Newt.]
Ripley: Get away from her you bitch!
Ripley: Well, someone's gonna have to do down there, take a portable transmitter and patch in.
Hudson: Yeah, sure, with those things running around? You can count me out.
Hicks: Well I guess we can count you out of everything than.
Hudson: That's right man.
Bishop: I'll go. I mean, I'm the only one qualified to remote-pilot the ship anyway.
Hudson: That's right, man, Bishop should go. Good idea!
Ripley: These people are here to protect you. They are soldiers.
Newt: It won't make any difference.
Ripley: I don't know which species is worse. You don't see them fucking each other over for a goddman percentage!
Ripley: They cut the power.
Hudson: What do you mean they cut the power? How could they cut the power, man? They're animals!
Hudson: Hey Vasquez, have you ever been mistaken for a man?
Vasquez: No, have you?
Hudson: What that's great, that's just fucking great man, now what the fuck are we supposed to do? We're in some real pretty shit now man...That's it man, game over man, game over, man! Game over! What the fuck are we gonna do now? What are we gonna do?
Bishop: I'm afraid I have some bad news.
Hudson: Well that's a switch.
CRITICAL COMMENTS
"Intense, exciting sequel directed by Cameron the same way he did The Terminator--once it gets going there's just no letup! Weaver is sensational in compelling lead role." -- Leonard Maltin "Aliens is absolutely, painfully and unremittingly intense for at least its last hour...I have never seen a movie that maintains such a pitch of intensity for so long; it's like being on some kind of hair-raising carnival ride that never stops." -- Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun Times
"Tautly paced and expertly directed, this roller coaster movie of a motion picture offers a little bit of everything, all wrapped up in a tidy science fiction/action package." -- James Berardinelli
"Talk about relentless. There probably has never been a cliffhanger as outrageous or as ingeniously sustained as Aliens." -- John Hartl, Film.Com
