QUOTES
Reese: Pay attention. The 600 series had rubber skin. We spotted them easy. But these are new. They look human. Sweat, bad breath, everything. Very hard to spot. I had to wait 'til he moved on you before I could zero him.
Sarah Connor: Hey, I'm not stupid y'know. They can't build anything like that yet.
Reese: No. Not yet. Not for about forty years.
Sarah Connor: So, it's from the future, is that right?
Reese: One possible future. From your point of view.
FACTS
Reese: Pain can be controlled, you just disconnect it.
RELEASE DATE:  October 26th, 1984 (USA)
Reese: John Connor gave me a picture of you once. I didn't know why at the time. It was very old, torn, faded. You were young like you are now. You seemed just a little sad. I used to always wonder what you were thinking at that moment. I mesmorised every line, every curve. I came across time for you Sarah, I love you, I always have.
BOX OFFICE RESULT: 36.9 million (USA)
BUDGET: $6.5 million (USA)
- Michael Biehn's character gets bitten on the hand by another character. This happens to him in every James Cameron movie he's in -- Aliens and The Abyss.
Listen! And understand! That terminator is out there. It can't be bargained with! It can't be reasoned with! It doesn't feel pity, or remorse, or fear. And it absolutely will not stop, ever, until you are dead!
- O.J. Simpson was considered for the role of the Terminator, but producers feared he wouldn't be taken seriously.
- Lance Henriksen was originally cast as the Terminator, with Schwarzenegger as the hero. Schwarzenegger read the script, and asked to play the Terminator instead. Punk 1: Nice night for a walk, eh?
Terminator: Nice night for a walk.
Punk 2: Wash day tomorrow. Nothing clean, right?
Terminator: Nothing clean, right.
Punk 1: This guy's a couple beers short of a six-pack!
The Terminator: Your clothes. Give them to me, now.
Punk 1: Hey, fuck you, asshole!
- Just after the first scene in the nightclub TechNior, we hear a police radio report a "two-eleven in progress at Bob's Liquor, corner of Third and Cameron," as  possible reference to director James Cameron.
Reese: Come with me if you want to live!
Dr. Silbermann: How are you supposed to get back?
Reese: I can't. Nobody gets home. Nobody else comes through. It's just him -- and me.
- Schwarzenegger's voice is used in exactly 16 lines, with 17 sentances spoken. The terminator has two other lines onscreen, one with the voice of a police officer overdubbed, and one with voice of Sarah's mother overdubbed. There are also many lines with the voice of Sarah's mother, and we learn that the Terminator is actually saying them, but we don't see it.
The Terminator: I'll be back!
Superintendent: Hey, buddy, you got a dead cat in there or what?
(
The Terminator visualizes a list of possible responses to get rid of him.)
Terminator: Fuck you, asshole.
- A scene in which a person picked up the CPU of the terminator after it was crushed was filmed, but not included.
Sarah Connor: You're terminated, fucker.
CRITICAL COMMENTS
- Science Fiction author Harlan Ellison filled a lawsuit against Cameron, claiming that he plagarized several of his short stories, namely "Soldier" and "Demon With a Glass Hand." The concept of "Skynet" could also have been borrowed from an Ellison short story called "I Have No Mouth and I Must Scream." Newer prints of the film acknowledge Ellison.
"Schwarzenegger is perfectly cast as violence-prone robot who cannot be stopped. Terrific action picture never lets up for a minute -- a model for others to follow." -- Leonard Maltin
- Shots through the Terminator's vision show Apple 2+ assembly code, taken from "Nibble", a computing magazine. Other code visible is written in COBOL.
"This rip-roaring action adventure." -- Alan Karp
- Followed by Terminator 2: Judgement Day and Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines.
