The Formation
of the Republic
All men who were twenty-one or older could vote
who the members of the Convention were. Only ten percent of the
population actually voted. Many of the royalists were too scared
to vote. The vast majority of the convention were republicans.
The Convention completely abolished the monarchy and established
the French Republic.
The Battle
of Valmy
The Prussians attacked a French army at Valmy.
The Prussians marched forward towards the French. The French did
not run away but stood their ground. The Prussians then marched
away again. This small event was considered a great victory and
after this battle the tide of the war turned.
The Execution
of Louis XVI
The Convention was also split into the Girondists
and the Jacobins. Both of these parties wanted a republic but the
Jacobins were more extreme. They accused the King of treason and
put him on trial. When some incriminating documents were found
Louis was found guilty and was put to death.
