| Why We Do the Thing We Do In 1996, at the Great River Folk Festival, folk singer Garnet Rogers mentioned that being a folk singer was kind of like being in the witness protection program…people know you are out here, they just don't know how to find you. Ten years ago this was still true, but today, with the growth of the World Wide Web and the home computer, that is changed. We know how to find you now. The community of folk performers, music long shared only through word of mouth, is now a big slice of what is available on the Internet. Web sites like songs.com and the Folk web ring link people to independent artists they might otherwise not know. Performers are setting up web sites, making their music available to people all over the world. And the fans are flocking to these sites, adding their own stories, color and texture to the rich tapestry of folk music. This site is a place for fans of John Gorka to come and find other like-minded music souls and read stories from people who have been touched by his music in profound and simple ways. That is what this web page is about. The music of John Gorka has influenced us and while this may not be the biggest or the most active site on the Web, it certainly will be intimate and real. We have placed a link to Red House Records, John's record label. They have information on new CD releases and how to purchase music. Also check out The Roots Agency and JohnGorka.com for John's tour itinerary and how to book him for performances. What you won't find here are stories about John's personal life. While those of us who consider ourselves Gypsy Lifers have made deep connections to the music, the lyrics and the stories, we remember that we are not his friends, we are his fans. Even though it feels like he has crawled into our psyches and told our stories, we must temper our passions and afford him the privacy he deserves. Hopefully, you will keep returning to this fan-based web site. It has been a labor of love as well as a great way to express our unique personalities. Some will say that is not such a good thing. To them we say, go eat scrapple on toast! Some will say, I agree, I understand, I am down here with you. To them we say, welcome to the Music of John Gorka web site. Come back often and add your own weave to the rich tapestry that is Gorka.
