“I’m suspicious,” Alec said to Jeff as they waited over near Terminal City’s west gate. “This is not right.”
Jeff looked amused. “Not right how?”
“Well, let’s take a look at this list,” Alec said. “First: Sasha wanted me to be here by this gate tonight because there was a surprise coming for me. Second: she refused to say what this surprise was or the exact time that it would be getting here. Third and probably what makes me nervous the most: she didn’t tell me this herself, she got Rena to tell me this.”
“I’m guessing that’s why you found me and talked me into waiting here with you,” Jeff concluded.
“Bingo,” Alec said. “I consider Sasha to be my sister and I love her, but there are times when trusting her could and has gotten me into very deep trouble.”
“Yeah, you told me about the time when she—“ Jeff stopped when something outside of the gates caught his eye. He zoomed in on it and he couldn’t help grinning.
Alec noticed the look on Jeff’s face. “Did you see more of your unit mates?”
“No,” Jeff said. “But you’re close.”
What does he mean by that? Alec turned to look in the direction that Jeff was and he grinned. He pulled a comm. unit from one of the pockets of his jeans and set it to the frequency that the transgenics on sentry duty were using. “X5-511 is incoming. Open the gate for him when he arrives.” He put the device back in his pocket and waited and a few minutes, Biggs walked through the gates into Terminal City.
“Sorry I’m late,” he said.
“Same old story,” Alec teased. He pulled Biggs into a huge hug. “Damnit, I’ve missed you…”
“…Biggs,” Biggs finished. “Yeah, missed you too, Alec.” He saw the slightly confused look on Alec’s face and smiled reassuringly. “I ran into Sasha earlier tonight when she and Rena were meeting their contact. She told me your name.” He put down the large duffel bag and backpack that he had been carrying. “I’m sorry that it took me so long to find you guys.”
“You’re here now, so don’t sweat it,” Alec told him.
“Yeah, you’re probably right,” Biggs said. He turned a little and saw Jeff and smiled again and walked over and gave him a hug. “Hey, good to see you too, kid!”
“It’s great to see you again too, Biggs,” Jeff said. “My name is Jeff. I stuck with the name from the Alaska mission.”
“Works for you,” Biggs agreed.
“Well, since it looks like you won’t be needing my help for anything, I’m going to get going,” Jeff said. “I need to get some sleep. I’ve got a long day planned tomorrow. I’ll see you guys again then.”
“Looking forward to it,” Alec said. He and Biggs waved to Jeff and after watching Jeff walk away, started walking themselves.
“So, what’s the deal with Terminal City?” Biggs asked. “Command structure, living arrangements, the whole deal? Who’s here and who’s not?”
“Well, I and now you as well are the highest ranking officers here,” Alec said. “None of the X5 squad commanders and 2ICs from Wyoming or New York have arrived yet. We’ve got the command teams from the New York X3 squad as well as the commanding officer for the Wyoming X4s as well as the second-in-command for the X4s from Seattle. We’ve also got the X6 squad commanders and 2ICs from both Seattle and Washington here.” He winced slightly and Biggs caught it.
“405 and 224 in the same general area? Ouch,” he said.
“Oh, 405—Becky—isn’t all that bad when you get to know her,” Alec said. “224, he’s going by Rob, is still an asshole, but Jeff and Becky pretty much drew a line with him and he’s at least showing some decency and he hasn’t crossed it. I hope it stays that way. As for the actual chain of command here, Max, a.k.a. 452, actually seems to have fallen into the top spot or close to the top. It looks like command here is based on where you are on that creepy NSA agent who’s hunting us down’s personal shitlist.” He grinned. “Max has the honor of being number one. I figure I’m about tied for second on it with Becky with Zack, who’s 599 if you didn’t know already, right behind us.”
“What did she do to piss this guy off?” Biggs asked, amused.
“Somebody will give you the whole story later, but let’s just say that it involves him nearly getting her killed and thinking that she was dead but then her turning up later to knock his ass out,” Alec said.
Biggs frowned a little. “Wait a second, you mentioned 452 and 599.”
“Yeah, actually all of the surviving ‘09ers are here in Terminal City,” Alec said. “They’re really not bad. They’re nice people, well when Max isn’t threatening to inflict violence on me but no more than Sasha used to do, and they do their share around here. Most of us have accepted them especially after we found out the specifics of why our old home burnt to the ground.”
“What are those specifics?”
“Renfro lit the match,” Alec said. “Those Eyes Only broadcasts really pissed off the Committee so they told Renfro the burn the place down and screw all of us. Renfro’s mistake was that she wanted to rub it in Max’s face before she threw the switch. Max took care of her and unlocked the doors. She even swiped the Manticore database.”
“Wow,” Biggs said. A thought occurred to him and he turned back to Alec. “Hey, if all of the ‘09ers are here, does that include…”
Alec paused and reached into his pocket and handed Biggs a photograph. “My son Anthony. I usually call him Tony. He was born on February 15th. You can meet him for real tomorrow.”
“He is a handsome little guy,” Biggs said. “Lucky you.” He handed the photo back to Alec and a few moments later, they reached the apartment building where Sasha lived and went inside and up to her apartment. Biggs took a deep breath before he knocked on the door. “Honey? It’s me.”
“I’ll be right there,” Sasha said. A few moments later, the door was flung open and immediately after that, Sasha threw her arms around Biggs’ neck. “Hey, sweetie. Welcome home.”
“It’s good to be home,” Biggs said. He kissed her deeply.
“I know how overdue you guys are for a PDA or two or million, but can it wait until I’m not in the general vicinity?” Alec joked.
Sasha pulled away from Biggs and punched Alec in the arm. “Shut up.” She looked back at Biggs and grinned. “I’m sorry that my hair’s all wet. I just finished getting that dye out of it.”
“No problem,” Biggs said. He reached out and fingered some of her hair. “It doesn’t matter what color your hair is, you’ll always be gorgeous to me.” The three of them went inside the apartment and Biggs put his things down. “Not a bad place you’ve—we’ve got here.”
“Thanks,” Sasha said. “It’s taken a lot of work, but I’ve managed to make it livable.” She caught the look on Alec’s face and answered his question before he could ask it. “With Rena and Zane.”
“Oh,” Alec said. He sat down on the couch with Biggs and Sasha joining him moments later. “So, buddy, what have you been up to since we moved out of our old home?”
Biggs sighed. “A lot. After the doors finally unlocked and I was able to get out of the gym, the route that I had planned to take to get back to you guys or where I thought the two of you would be got blocked by debris. A mixed group of X-series spotted me, it was mostly some younger ones with a couple of threes thrown in, and asked me for help so I ended up getting outside and to and over the perimeter fence with them. Once I was over, I hung around with one of the X3s for a few months, X3-829 or as he decided later, Len. He was a nice enough guy and we looked enough alike to pass for at least cousins, which we ended up doing a lot of the time when we needed a place to stay or for the occasional scam for money or food.”
“What happened to Len?” Sasha asked.
“Four or so months after the fire, we attempted to rob a bank just outside of Detroit but it went sideways,” Biggs continued. “I told Len to haul ass out of there and to meet me at our rendezvous point, but you know that as fast as the threes are, we’re a lot faster. I got clear and got to the rendezvous, but Len never showed up. I waited for as long as I could before I went back to the apartment that we’d been staying in at the time and got my things and left town. I moved around a lot for the next few months before I ran into one of the Seattle X7s. Weird as hell kid. He didn’t speak, but luckily we both knew American Sign Language as well as the signals that we were taught back at Manticore so we were able to communicate.” He shook his head. “He needed somebody to take orders from, that was for sure, because he seemed a little bit…well, I’d never use happy or other forms of the word to describe an X7, but he didn’t seem quite as down once I met up with him and gave him some things to do. Poor guy was probably missing his creepy buddies, too.”
“I don’t blame him,” Alec said. “From what I’ve read in the database, the X7s from our old place were even less independent and more hive-minded than the sevens from Gillette and Syracuse. Those guys appeared to have done relatively okay since the fire, but it must have been even harder for the über-clones at least at first.” He shrugged. “What then?”
“I hung with him until two days ago,” Biggs said. “He was still weird, but we got along well enough and he actually was a big help on more than one occasion. Anyway, we finally made our way back into the Seattle area and he started to look even more lively. I guess he somehow knew that more of his…fellow Seattle sevens were in the area. He told me that he wanted to leave and go off on his own and I let him and found a place. I’d decided to start getting money and possibly establishing contacts of various types. That’s what I was doing when I was at the nightclub tonight when I ran into Sasha.”
There was a knock at the door. “Hey, we’re back. I hope it’s not too early,” Rena said from the hallway. Biggs jumped a little at hearing her voice and Sasha laughed softly and gave him a kiss on the cheek.
“You’ll get used to it,” she assured him. She got up and went over to her door and opened it and grinned when she saw Jade and Julia in Rena’s arms. “Hey, sweeties! We’re you good for your aunt and uncle, huh?”
“They were fine,” Rena said. “A little fussy at one point, but nothing that couldn’t be taken care of.” She carefully handed the infant twins back to Sasha. “I’ll see you tomorrow, sis.”
“See you then,” Sasha echoed. After Rena had closed the door, Sasha closed her eyes briefly and took a deep breath. It’s now or never. Please let him love them! Please let him accept my daughters! She turned around and walked slowly back to Biggs and Alec. “Biggs, I would like you to meet my twin daughters. In my right arm is Jade and in my left arm is Julia. Jade, Julia, this is Biggs, the special man that Mommy tells you about all of the time.”
“Wow,” Biggs said slowly. He stared at the two infants in Sasha’s arms for several long moments. “Jade has her—591’s eyes.”
“It’s how she got her name,” Sasha agreed quietly.
Biggs was silent for several more moments. He just stared at the babies, lost in his thoughts. He barely even noticed Alec discreetly leaving the apartment. Those beautiful little girls…they should have been my daughters. Why couldn’t I have been the father? “I wanted to be their father.”
“You still can be,” Sasha said. “You might not be the one who got me pregnant, but there’s more to being a father than simply contributing DNA. I don’t know or care where 591 is, so right now you’re the only father they have.” She managed a faint smirk. “If we’re lucky, it’ll stay that way.”
“Maybe,” Biggs echoed. He tentatively reached out with one finger and gently touched the side of Julia’s face. She gurgled happily and Biggs couldn’t help smiling. “You really are a charmer, aren’t you, young lady?” He laughed when he saw Jade getting a little jealous of the attention that her sister was getting and reach out for Biggs. “You too? I guess there’s enough of me to go around.” He reached out and carefully took the babies into his arms. “Something’s giving me the impression that both of you got your mommy’s talent for wrapping me around your fingers. I wonder why I would think something like that?”
Sasha grinned widely at the sight of her boyfriend holding her children. “Thank you.”
“They’re your children,” Biggs said. “You love them with all of your heart. How can I not accept them when they mean so much to you?” He shifted the girls in his arms. “One of these days, I’ll love them too. I might even be at least halfway there already.” He leaned forward and kissed Sasha on the lips. “I couldn’t be happier, sweetheart. I’m finally home.”
“It was worth the wait,” Sasha said softly.
“It was more than worth it,” Biggs agreed.
