| Mr. Daschle, I realize that it is a part of your unwritten responsibility to do all you can to make the Republican Party look bad, to refute their policies, and to sway those "middle of the roaders" over to your side. I know that your allegiance belongs to the Democratic Party. I know that you must put a spin on things at times. But what you said on Monday, "I'm saddened, saddened that this president failed so miserably at diplomacy that we're now forced to war," was simply unacceptable language with terrible timing. We've heard the phrase "beyond the pale" quite frequently, since Vice President Dick Cheney used it. But what you said, Mr. Daschle, goes way, way, WAY beyond the pale. Yet today, you said that you stand by your statement. You're climbing pretty far out on a very thin limb. And it seems you are throwing sand in the face of our troops, who totally support our President. There's been plenty said to demoralize our military, from Hollywood and other celebrities. Crass statements coming from our elected officials is worse, much worse, than what we've heard from citizens, whether their names are widely known or not. I personally expect better from our elected officials at a time of impending war. President Bush went the extra mile, actually, a thousand extra miles, to get a unified response from the world to disarm Saddam. He went much farther than Bill Clinton ever did; yet you supported Bill Clinton in his less than half-hearted attempt at disarming Saddam. Mr. Daschle, some of the very words you used in support of Clinton are the very words that President Bush uses today. Do you think that we don't remember? Do you think that America wasn't paying attention? Your website doesn't seem to include the cutting comments you made about our President. I do see many words in support of our troops. How can you support our troops and in nearly the same breath, cut their Commander and Chief to the very core? Mr. Daschle, I want you to know that America will not soon forget what you said. There may be many that agree with you, but by far, most do not. Most are completely offended and incensed by your statement. You should be ashamed of yourself and I certainly hope when our troops come home, they let you know just how very disappointed they are in you. It's a sad day in America. Not only are we going to a war that nobody wanted to see happen, but we have government leaders adding insult to injury. Mr. Daschle, your behavior makes me sick. Shortie 03-18-03 8:30 P.M. EST |
