To quote Alex McCue, the Purge are not a 'band' at all, but a 'recording entaty'. It seems remarkable now that this entirely studio-based rock threepiece began life as a talent show live act at an enducation enrichment course in the Sussex countryside, performing comedy songs under the name The Bricklayers (full story here). The band have always been ambitious, constantly seeking to better themselves which each record they make, though understandably the transition from comedy live band to a more serious studio band took time, hard work and unfortunately, two unimpressive albums.
Between 2002 and 2004 the Purge were a four-piece, singer Joe Mills featuring on four of the band's albums. During this time the Purge's music has journeyed from style to style, from subject to subject, as the recording equipement at their disposal allows them to record better and better sounding albums. But the Purge's sound has remained distinct throughout, courtesy of Alex McCue's all-powerful and domaneering drums and guitars, Christian Dollimore's extravagant, elegent pianos and organs and Robert Hemmens' at-times-adventurous but always rock-solid bass. Now once again a threepiece, The Purge are looking to add the singing talents of Dollimore and McCue into this mix.
