Letter to Parp from Murton in Africa

15th March 1997

Well here I am sitting on the side of the road trying to hitch to Mozambique. Bugger, would you believe it, I have just sat down and it has started spitting - arse!!

I am now of the back of a pickup heading East to meet Ian and Emma at the border tomorrow. Just had dinner which was a couple of banana’s (2.5p each from a woman on the side of the road) and a couple of scones (expensive at 11p each).

**Then he drew a couple of things that he has eaten recently. A caterpillar which apparently tastes like straw, and a small dried bird, which tastes like chicken (doesn’t everything foreign)**

In answer to your comment about travelling across continents and arriving on time - it doesn’t always go according to plan (missed a bus or two, post office closed, that sort of thing, usually it is due to "Shall we have a cup of tea?"!!!!).

**Gave up writing here due to van bumping around**.

16th March 1997

Now in Mutare (?) and we ARE going to Mozambique tomorrow. Spoke to two Japanese who have just been to Mozambique and also a Mozambian couple today and they just kept saying how hard, backward, poor, dodgy and beautiful the country is. Well I will let you know when I get out the other side.

Summary of his birthday. It went something along the lines of:

Get up
Big fry up
Presents and cards - excellent
Beer and pool - before 10am
Double bonus the beer, a) cause it’s beer and b) Ian and I gave it up for lent just for a laugh (longest 40 days ever)
Town for shopping, chores and to "do lunch"
Bumped into Scotty (an Aussie surfer who we travelled with for a few days on and off before)
Back to the hostel to play volleyball (England v Pakistan) Swim
Birthday cake and cups of tea (I was holding Ian to his promise to make me a cake, he had it made instead. It was ace, with cream and icing, he MADE some mini candles to go on it, he has also promised to make my 40th !!!!!!)
Back to town to meet some others for a curry
All in all a most excellent day!!! (We all had a ‘kin excellent day and Emma said “I don’t care if you did enjoy your birthday cause I bloody did!!”).

Tell you something about Africa - it’s ace ‘coz 50% of the people have huge boobs - the other 50% are blokes!!!

New poste restante after mid/end April is:

Bhopal,
Madhaya (this is the region)
India

Take care and stay happy,

Murton
