MODERN ART
At the turn of the 20th Century many innovations were made in the field of the arts. A new style "Modernism" was born. There was great interest in design, new shapes and materials as well as in new ways of doing things. Art, in its many forms, had a strong social function. Famous artists of the time were Gaudí, Domènec i Montaner (architects), Rusiñol (painter and writer), Cases (painter and posters designer) as well as Joan Maragall and Jaume Brossa (writers.)

Antoni Gaudí, a unique and imaginative architect, left us lots of beautiful works. These are scattered all over Barcelona (as well as in other places in Catalonia and Spain) "La Sagrada Familia" (The Holy Family Church), "La Pedrera" (also known as "The Milà Household") and "El Parc Güell" are among his masterpieces. Gaudí´s works are quite exhuberant and richly decorated. Such are the main characteristics of "Modernism", the style that flourished in Catalonia at the turn of the 20th Century.

Salvador Dalí, Joan Miró, and Antoni Tàpies are among the three best-known modern Catalan painters. Tàpies (b. 1923 ) is the only one of these three who is still alive today. They all have their own museums. The "Teatre-Museu Salvador Dalí" is in Figueres (Girona). The other two museums, "Fundació Joan Miró" and "Fundació Antoni Tàpies" are based in Barcelona.

Picasso (b.1881, d.1973 ) lived in Barcelona for a few years. the city, with its unique cosmopolitan atmosphere, clearly influenced the man and his work. No wonder Picasso donated many of his paintings to the city. These can be admired at the Picasso Museum.
