LITTLE MISSY

She was petite

sandy blonde hair

green-eyed

self-centered

and not one bit affectionate.

A cold and calculating little missy

who knew what she wanted

and was determined to get it.

It was plain to me

that Adam had not found the right girl.

I, of course, knew who the right girl was.

Sweet

gentle

Anna.

Oh sure, Anna was a little round

and she wore her dark hair too long

so that it was always frizzy

but she had a heart of gold.

And she loved Adam to pieces.

I spoke to him about her

but he shrugged

and said that she was nice

but he had no feelings for her.

So it didn't do me any good

to point out her good traits

because he was hell-bent

on marrying the little missy.

I laid in bed at night

twisting and turning

my sheets knotting around my legs

and thought about India

arranged marriages

lucky parents making the decision

and I even thought about offering her money

to go away.

Adam was such a nice boy

so kind

what did he want with a girl

who talked about herself continually

whose only hobbies were suntanning

and shopping

and who he could barely ever catch

to kiss.

The horror of it was

that there was nothing I could do.
