On its own, every Handel aria represents a masterpiece of melody and expression. Strung together in an opera, Handel aria after Handel aria, however, invariably leads to a monotonous, meandering evening in which the multiple notes in a coloratura line are rivaled in number only by the yawns of audience members. Weaned on the drama and passion of Verdi and Wagner, most today find it difficult to relate to Handel's one -dimensional characters lost in bewilderingly complex plots. Still, the New York City Opera's current Handel opera revival proves that his works deserve a dusting off every fifty years or so, not only to present some of these gorgeous arias, but to remind us of a musical time in which rapid roulades and trills formed the basis of operatic style. .
