In David Alden's new production, the old story of the magician Alcina, who transfigures her lovers into animals, gets a whole new meaning. This subhuman life is as close to nature as possible. Alden is one of the central figures in the renaissance of Handel's operas on stage. He has helped to free the opera seria from centuries of stiff, monotonous presentations; has rediscovered their dramaturgical vitality; and demonstrated that there is more to them than a succession of arias and recitatives. |

If nothing else, this "Alcina" demonstrates how well Handel's intimately scaled writing can work in a potentially forbidding cavern like the War Memorial.
But in the face of all of this musical bounty, the modern-dress production - - an import from the Stuttgart Opera jointly credited to directors and dramaturges Jossi Wieler and Sergio Morabito -- remained serenely oblivious. - Review |
