Photo: Monika Rittershaus- There were three main props: a monumental mobile phone, used as the Act 1 gong, and also for confirming the answers to the riddles; a giant toy bear serving as Turandot's capsule refuge; and a tiled-roof, one-room Japanese house built over a garage, belonging to Altoum, but taken over by the loveless couple at the end of the opera.

The original James Robinson production was directed in Houston by Peter Rothstein who made good use of a young cast with well-honed stage skills. Anna Oliver's costuming was particularly flattering to the men. Anita Stewart's sets consisted mainly of scaffolding and bare platforms, but the inventive lighting by Nigel Levings and the projections by John Boesch helped to flesh out the stage picture. |

Through the idiomatic artistic lens of the renowned artist, David Hockney, here the set designer, the story unfolds in brilliant luminosity, morphing from one visual thrill to the next, underscoring Puccini’s music and reinforcing the composer’s musical thrust. The set design is simple. Extrapolations of basic shapes from Chinese cultural icons: a sword’s edge, a dragon’s back. Sharp and clean. Review/ SFCV |
