A WALK BETWEEN TWO HEARTS

PART 3

Nikita sat down at Michael’s desk, biting her thumb nervously as she recounted that afternoons briefing. Simone,, alive, still working for Section. It seemed impossible, the ultimate cruel joke played on all three of them. The look on Michaels face was something she wouldn’t easily nor soon forget. He seemed torn, not knowing what to feel. She too felt the same way. After all this time, they were finally becoming a couple and now this. It didn’t seem fair…but then, nothing was fair in here.

The door opened and he walked in, looking almost shell shocked shutting the door behind him.

Nikita pulled her feet from atop the desk and stood up, clearing her throat.

He looked at her from the door, unmoving, leaning on the wall. Lowering his head, he took a deep breath before looking back up at her.

It’s really her? It’s not some trick on Sections part? She asked lowly, afraid of the answer she knew she was going to get.

He nodded and looked away again, his hand reached out to her.

Closing the distance between them she took him in her arms, holding him tightly. His hands rubbed her back, resting his head on her shoulder much like she had so long ago, the night she almost committed suicide. His breathing was rapid, erratic like he had just run a million miles and she closed her eyes wishing this day had been different.

Pulling out of her arms he took a few steps from her, his back to her as she watched him, waiting for him to speak. Turning his head slightly, he began in a hushed voice.

I will be teaming up with her for this mission.

He paused for a moment and began again.

I am going to need time Nikita.

He lowered his head, staring down at the floor wishing it would open and swallow him whole. Nikita felt her stomach lurch painfully and nodded.

Yes,, I know.

Her voice was flat, unemotional and he sighed at the sound of it in his ears. It slammed into his heart like a bullet knowing how this had to be hurting her.

You know how I feel, but she…

His voice trailed off leaving strained silence between them,,, the unspoken words hung like a black wall separating them.

Yes,,,, I know.

She laughed bitterly inside at the inane usage of that sentence she seemed to keep repeating. Michael turned once again to face her, tucking his hair behind his ear.

She is still my wife.

Nikita looked away, afraid he might see the unwanted tears forming in her large blue eyes that threatened to spill onto her cheeks.

Michael came to her, resting his hands on her shoulders, leaning his fore head on the back of her head, inhaling the tangerine smell of her hair.

I have to go. He whispered turning her to face him. Pushing back the long blonde hair from her eyes, he saw the pain she was trying to hide and kissed her softly, his own staying open.

Dinner is off? She asked licking her bottom lip, pulling her head back to look up at him after a moment.

Michael touched her eyebrow; his eyes stared into hers and leaned down for another quick kiss and moved past her, the question answered without saying a word.

Nikita sighed, wiping her eyes with her hand, still tasting him on her lips and it made her want to die.

Madeline looked up at Operations over her shoulder as she switched off the hidden camera in Michael’ office.

Operations lit a cigarette, nodding as he smiled slightly.

Crossing her slim legs under the glass tabletop, she leaned back in her high back leather swivel chair watching him move to her plants.

The wedge is undeniably in place. It will be a matter of time before Michael realizes his feelings for Simone are still intact and he leaves Nikita for her. It’s a certainty.

She picked up her teacup and blew softly on the rising steam before taking a sip.

Ops blew out a thin bluish stream of smoke looking at her through the stand filled with exotic flowers.

There are defiantly feelings there, but the real question is… are there enough feelings left for him to break his ties to Nikita?

Give it time. He responded much like I expected him to.

Ops inclined his head giving her another smile. Time,,,,, if you say so.

He took another puff of his cigarette and turned to leave.

Madeline pushed a button on her comm., and spoke evenly. You can come in now Simone.

The door slide open almost immediately and Simone came down the 4 steps as graceful as a cat approaching the desk. Madeline indicated she should sit and set her cup down. Folding her hands on her lap, she gave Simone a smile, waiting for the beautiful woman to get settled in her chair.

So, how does he look to you? She asked in a friendly voice.

Simone looked down at her hands on her lap before answering.

You told me he was informed of my presence here in Section. In fact, he thought I was dead until today. You lied to me all this time Madeline. Why? Why hurt him like this? Isn’t it enough that Section left me for dead with Sparks, allowing Michael to think I was gone for good? Her voice was calm, cold even and it didn’t go unnoticed by Madeline.

Yours is not to question the motives of what we do, but to follow orders. If that’s too difficult for you…. Madeline let her sentence hang, incomplete.

Simone drew herself up straighter, her deep brown eyes flashed defiantly.

Looking suddenly bored, Madeline picked up her cup for another sip before continuing. You’re a level 7 Operative Simone,, act like one. Now… you are having dinner with him this evening?

Simone nodded; choosing to remain silent, knowing arguing was useless.

You will have the entire evening to do your job and we expect you to follow through. I will of course, expect a full report.

Madeline sipped the tea again and then set it down.

Simone stood up, smoothing her vest down over her flat tummy. Naturally.
