A WALK BETWEEN TWO HEARTS

PART 4

Michael’s cell sounded as he entered his apt, carrying his helmet under his arm. Pulling the small cell out from his pocket, he flipped it open.

Yes?

Hello Michael.

Michael pulled the loft elevator door down the noise making her pause until it quieted down again. Her soft voice made him feel immediately uncomfortable, his stomach tightening with a tension he couldn’t control. He waited for her to continue as he set the helmet and his gloves on the kitchen counter.

We need to talk.

She sounded anxious, much like how he felt right now.

Yes, I know.

He responded with his usual hushed yet even voice. Pulling the zipper down on his leather jacket, he leaned on the counter, crossing his ankles.

Your place? She suggested questioningly.

Fine. What time? He asked looking down at his watch. The blue glowing numbers read 630 pm.

8 o’clock? I will bring dinner with me. She said a little more calmly this time.

Michael uncrossed his ankles and nodded as if she could see him. Fine.

Pulling the phone from his ear, he flipped it shut, setting it on the counter beside him, closing his eyes. A pain was forming over his eyes, his classic tension headache was fast developing and he cursed silently. Rubbing his eyes with his hands, he tried to shut out memories of them together. Her brown eyes sparkling at him as she made breakfast that first morning together. The way she looked in his shirt, her slender copper legs wrapping around him as they made love all night, her voice in his ear, panting his name over and over..

His eyes snapped open again, and he shook his head, trying to clear his mind as he reached into the cupboard for a glass.

Turning the faucet on, he let the water run for a moment, hoping it would get colder. It was then his mind flooded with Nikita. Her long blonde hair, crystal clear blue eyes, the boathouse….

Merde….

He swore aloud as h reached for the aspirin on top of the refrigerator, twisting the cap off angrily. Shaking out 2 small white pills, he dropped them onto his tongue and washed them back with the semi cold water. The next few hours were going to be taxing on his nerves. Pulling his jacket off, he tossed it onto a chair at the end of the counter, his eyes looking out the gigantic windows to brilliant sunset over the city line. He wondered if she was watching the same sunset from her apt.

Nikita… He murmured her name softly, unable to enjoy the brilliant array of colours in the sky as the sun rapidly dropped for the day.

Impulsively, he picked up his cell once again and speed dialed her number. It rang a few times before she answered.

Hello?

Nikita…..

He closed his eyes as he spoke her name, leaning his head on the cool windowpane. At first she was silent, only the sound of her slightly laboured breathing could be heard.

Nikita… I wish things could be different.

Michael…

Her voice cut him off, making him go quiet, waiting for her to continue. He strained to catch any sound from her other then her breathing, his heart felt like it was being torn in two. The silence stretched into a full minute, neither seemingly willing to continue nor hang up.

Goodnight Michael.

Her voice startled him, making him actually jump.

Nikita…

Yes?

Are you watching the sunset?

Nikita gave a sad smile, leaning on the balcony ledge. Yes.

Me too.

Michael?

Yes?

I love you,,, no matter what.. okay?

Michael closed his eyes, fist clenching against the cool glass wanting to cry with relief.

Thank you Nikita.

His voice was heavy with emotion, unmistakable in her ear and she tried to swallow the sob in her throat.

Good night Michael.

The click in his ear was deafening and he turned it off, his hand letting it drop onto the floor beside him with a loud clatter.

Nikita sat curled up in one of Michael’s shirts, her eyes gazing out into the stars above. The air was chilly, making her shiver. Sighing, she closed her eyes pulling her feet up onto the chair, resting her chin on the tops of her knees. Tonight was going to be a long night as would each night for the next while. She prayed their love was strong enough to get through this, that he would choose her over Simone. It had been hard enough fighting a memory but now that memory was a reality once again. Simone would prove to be a catalyst for them. She only hoped it would all work out and she would still have his heart for her own.
