A WALK BETWEEN TWO HEARTS

PART 5

Dinner had been eaten in almost awkward silence, each glancing at the other between mouthfuls, both trapped with their own thoughts. Simone reached for the wine and poured him some more wine and then refilled her glass.

Thank you.

He took the glass, bringing it to his lips for a sip. The tangy rich flavour was wasted on his palette due to nerves.

Getting to her feet, she held her glass in her hand, walking slowly to the huge loft windows, her eyes taking in the thousands of city lights.

Michael watched her from his seat, taking in her petite profile. Her hair was longer, her skin once again smooth and clear. She was the same Simone from years ago. Resting her hand on her hip, she took another sip, setting the glass on the windows ledge.

You love her don’t you?

Her voice was clear and strong, making Michael look away for a moment.

Yes.

He answered bringing his gaze back to her. Simone looked back at him over her shoulder for a moment before returning hr gaze out to the lights below.

How nice.

She sounded bitter yet detached, and it didn’t go unnoticed by either. She rolled her eyes, cursing herself for showing her obvious feelings on the matter.

When was it exactly Michael that you stopped loving me? Was it a day, a week, a month?

She turned to look at him, her eyes giving away the pain she felt at the thought of losing him to another.

Michael dabbed his mouth with the napkin, setting it down beside his now empty plate and got to his feet, approaching her.

Simone looked away, turning her back to him, wishing she were dead.

Michael placed his hands on her shoulders, pulling her hair back in a ponytail in his hands, recalling the feel of it when they made love in this very loft.

I never stopped loving you Simone…. Not entirely. He said quietly, trying to be honest as possible.

Simone stiffened at his touch; her eyes closed momentarily, memories of them so long ago, together much like they were now.

When I lost you the first time, I died inside. Nothing but my job meant anything to me. I hid inside myself for months, empty and angry. Sections saw my percentages and were satisfied, but they knew I was dying on them. That’s when they brought her in making me her trainer. She was defiant, stubborn, vital. She reminded me what it was to want to live again. Then when we went in on the mission for Glass Curtain, I found you,,, only to lose you yet again. Nikita saved me Simone. Without her, I would be dead.

He paused, letting her hair go when she turned to face him. His stomach lurched at the tears in her eyes as she looked up to him.

But I still love you Michael…. The thought of us together again is what got me this far. You owe it to us to give us a chance Michael. I am your wife.

Her voice caught and she tried to step away from him, ashamed of her tears.

Michael caught her in his arms, pulling her back to him, closing his arms around her and resting his cheek on the top of her head. Feeling her in his arms again felt good, memories of the pain and heartache he went thru when he lost her all came crashing back, only to be overtaken by a wave of relief to have her alive and with him again.

Simone clung to him, letting the pent up sobs out, relishing the feel of him against her once again after so long.

It was dreams of us, of you that got me thru it Michael. It was hell on earth with Sparks. He used to tell me you knew I was alive and didn’t care….. I never believed……

She took in a shaky breath, pulling her head back, her hand coming up to stroke his face.

I never believed Michael…

Standing up on tiptoes, she pressed her mouth to his, grateful when he didn’t pull away from her.

Michael closed his eyes, battling his conscience, his heart cried out for Nikita but something deeper called out another name.

Simone.

Speaking her name aloud against her lips made them both open their eyes, taking in the other. Michael grazed his fingertips across her cheek and down onto her lips, trying to block out his jumbled emotions, the visions of Nikita,, memories of the woman he now held in his arms, his wife. The words made his soul break, feeling the old love for her yet feeling the love for Nikita.

I fought so hard to get back to us Michael. When I saw you back in Section, everything I went through,,, it faded away. I felt joy once more. I felt alive.

She paused leaning into his hand as he cupped her face, closing her eyes for a moment, lifting her face to his again, and offering him her mouth.

Michael blinked rapidly, the stinging burn of unshed tears hurting his eyes. Slowly, he felt his resolve fading, the memories of their love consumed him and he pressed his open mouth to hers, their tongues seeking the other in quiet calm desperation. Lifting her up by her waist, he walked them to his bed, her arms wrapped around his neck, hands woven into his long hair as he laid her down gently.
