Brazil - Amazon Boat Trip

These are photos from my six day trip up the Amazon river in a boat
and from the cities at either end; Belem and Manaus. Not being
constitutionally adapted to the heat, humidity, and bugs, I did not visit
the fabled rainforest, but merely skirted it's edges in the populated
zone along the river.
Joao Pessoa

I paid $90 for a small cabin on the boat, called the Joao
Pessoa. My cabin was up on the top level, near the front.

Hammock Steerage

For only $40 I could have slung up a hammock on one of
the two lower decks. I would have run the risk of having
my bags stolen. I also would have had to dealt with fumes
from the diesel engine. The cabin space was money well
spent.

Antartica Beer

I recommend Antartica amongst the various brands of beer.

Beggar Boats

Along portions of our route people living along the riverside
would approach our boat in small canoes and beg for stuff. People
on the boat would toss them food in plastic bags.

Beggar Boats at Port

In port the competition between the food sellers and the beggars
got very intense.

Shoreline

The Forest

This is all I ever saw of the fabled Amazon rain forest. The view
from the boat.

Approaching Storm

I would sit on the boats bow and watch approaching thunder heads
roll across the horizon, darken the sky, and then burst forth with
torrential downpours.

Kids on Boat

Bored with photographing the shore, I started taking pictures
of the kids on the boat who'd spend the day causing mischief up
on the deck.
