4/8/03- Know Your Rights by the Clash
I heard the other day that Madonna had pulled her new video off the air out of respect for the troops in Iraq. The sad thing is that it is probably one of the few videos worth watching. I, for one, love when musical artists use their videos and music to express real opinions about world events. Controversy in interesting, yet everytime an artist creates controversy they are looked down on and sometimes even censored.
What ever happened to freedom of speech and freedom of the press? We are told that these freedoms are our rights as Americans, yet whenever someone actually uses these rights, they are silenced by censors. That's what my favorite line in this Clash song is talking about: "You have the right to free speech as long as you're not dumb enough to actually try it".
This song is why I love the Clash. They were the CNN side of punk, constantly expressing views on politics, society, government, and current events. In this song, they speak out about the promise of certain rights that aren't always fulfilled. They encouraged the common people to speak out if they were unsatisfied with their personal rights.
p.s. If you don't like the Clash, there is something seriously wrong with you...
RIP Joe Strummer....(1952-2002)
4/9/03- American Pie by Don McLean
I didn't post the entire lyrics because this song is LONG! I just left out the 4th and 5th  verses because I don't like them as much as the rest.
I love this song! There are so many references to so many important events in history and music. My favorite verse is the second one...I just love the use of words and the way he describes music. "Do you believe in rock and roll, can music save your mortal soul?" Such a great lyric! And I love love love love the many references to Bob Dylan and James Dean, two of my favorite people of all time.
Click here for an interpretation and analysis of the song...
The analysis is actually really interesting, if you're the type of person who is into really classic rock and roll. (Does that description apply to anyone these days?) If you take the time to read the analysis, the song will hold a lot more meaning, which I consider to be a very good thing.
4/13/03- Seems by Queen Sarah Saturday
I've been on an Empire Records kick the last couple days. I hadn't seen it in a while and then I rented it, and god, its just the BEST movie. This song is from the beginning where Mark gets to pick the song and then they're all dancing around and singing and getting ready to open up the store...and then...A.J. vetoes the song and Mark looks so sad! Mark is definitely the best character in that movie.(SHOPLIFTER ER ER ER!)  But yeah, this song just makes me happy. EVERYONE MUST SEE THIS MOVIE!
DAMN THE MAN! SAVE THE EMPIRE!
4/15/03 Bookend Theme by Simon and Garfunkel
This is a very short song. Very nostalgic and whatnot. Reminds of lots of people.
So yeah, I usually put up a picture of the person who sings the song, but I'm gonna make an exception today because Simon and Garfunkel aren't very pretty....so enjoy a nice picture of the always beautiful Chris Carrabba!
4/17/03 I Was Made to Love Her by Stevie Wonder
Is there anyone in the world who sings better than Stevie Wonder? (If you say yes, you're going to recieve a nice swift kick to the head.) I love Stevie Wonder. He sings like a goddam angel. This is my favorite Stevie Wonder song. It's just a very sweet song. Yeah, so thats all. Talk to y'all later!
4/21/03 Break on Through (to the Other Side) by the Doors
Ok, today I bring you a song by the oh so talented Doors. Its such a crazy song. Lots of freaky organs and repeated lyrics and it just whoa. Does everyone agree with me that Jim Morrison was the most beautiful person ever to live? He was practically perfect. Wow. I love this band. Actually, I don't care much about the rest of the band, just Jim. Is that so wrong?
So listen to some psychedelic (did I just say psychedelic?) sixties music...and have a blast...peace and love y'all. -Sharon
4/23/03 Somebody to Love by Queen
*sigh* I love this song. Queen kicks so much ass. They're my #2 band and this is my #3 song. Aaaah...it's just so sad and lonely and a little tiny bit hopeful. I'm sure we've all bet at a place where we can relate to this song...Freddie Mercury had the most AMAZING voice. He could sing rock, gospel, jazz, opera, musical theater, etc. etc. etc. I have defended Queen to so many people. "They were all GAY!"*gasp!* God forbid that we listen to music by gay people! Oh no, is their gayness going to rub off on me?" Sorry, I have a big problem with homophobic people. They have major insecurties and they're close minded and I seriously can't stand it.
Oops. Got off track...What was I talking about? Right! Queen! Ummm, they're great and their music gives me chills and rest in peace forever Freddie! (He was ugly ugly ugly though, so I'm putting up a picture of Brad Pitt.)
4/24/03 Positively 4th Street by Bob Dylan
This song cracks me up. I love love love the last line of the song. The way Mr. Dylan sings it is just classic! Its a cool song. Good lyrics. Reminds me of a lot of people who walk the halls of Lake Highlands. Bob Dylan rocks my world. Peace out y'all.
4/26/03 Oh! Sweet Nuthin by the Velvet Underground
I don't how many of you know the Velvet Underground, but they're great. I think they're from late sixties and early seventies.
But anyway, last night I was driving home from a friend's house at about midnight and the roads were clear. Seriously, I think I saw a total of 6 cars. And I was listening to this song. At the end of this song. there's an amazing guitar solo, and as I was listening to it, I felt like all the weight from this past week was just lifting off my shoulders. And I felt safe and happy for the first time in a while. For the seven minutes that I was listening to this song, all the messed up friendships, fights with my parents, and annoyances of life were just gone. And it was just me on the road, driving home.
I sound crazy, I know, but this is what music is supposed to do to you. It's supposed to take you to a different place and make you feel.
Great song. Great great song.

4/27/03 Stwisted by Edie Brickell
Edie Brickell again....I relate to this song sooooo much. "And I know I'll be fine just as soon as I let go" I wish it was easier to let go. For me, it's impossible.
Good luck finding this song on Kazaa. It's nearly impossible. If I were you, i'd buy the cd because it's great! "Ghost of a Dog" by Edie Brickell and the New Bohemians....BUY IT!!!!
4/30/03 Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking for by U2
This song is just WOW. I love all the songs off the Joshua Tree, but this one is just unlike anything else. How can you hear this song and not believe in God? When I lose faith..(oh no, I'm talking about Christianity again!)...all I need to do is listen to this song.
But on a non-Christian note, I think that this song just holds a universal message of searching for something greater, something to complete us.
Here's a bit of advice: Do you want to feel connected to the world? Play this song while you're driving on an empty road, with the windows rolled down, when the sky is blue and there are huge white clouds and turn it way way up when it gets to the line "I believe in the Kingdom come..." It's amazing!
