9/21/03 I Just Wasn't Made for these Times by the Beach Boys Ok....I know everyone thinks that the Beach Boys are cheesy California-loving-car-worshipping-girl-crazy-happy-go-lucky-surfer- boys, but they're soooo much more than that. This is a really sensitive song that I think pretty much everyone can relate to. Other really good Beach Boys songs: God Only Knows, Wouldn't It Be Nice, That's Not Me, I'm Waiting for the Day. I love the Beach Boys. 9/23/03 Get Me Away Fro Here I'm Dying by Belle and Sebastian I love this song, its upbeat even though the title is kind of sad. And the lyrics are just great, especially the second verse which reminds me of me and my quickness to trust people. If you haven't been lucky enough to hear Belle and Sebastian, think Nick Drake meets the Velvet Underground. Definitely not for everyone, but if you're a Nick Drake fan, I can almost guarantee you'll like them. (And if you're a Nick Drake fan, I can also almost guarantee that I'll like you) 9/24/03 Dear Prudence by the Beatles I worship this song. It's just amazing amazing amazing. John Lennon is everything. I used to be a Paul-girl, but I've been listening to the White Album a lot lately, and its been all about John. You can really tell which songs were written more by John or more by Paul and this one is definitely John. But anyway, this song is beauty and sadness and everything important, so listen to it. (And isn't that a cool photograph?) 9/29/03 Sympathy for the Devil by the Rolling Stones I would give anything and everything to write a song like this. It's such a powerful and emotional song. Rock on, Rolling Stones. 10/1/03 Devil Got My Woman by Skip James There's something about this song that is so haunting and beautiful. I came across it when I watched Ghost World the other night.(Fabulous movie, by the way). Thora Birch's character is listening to this song, and her performance in that scene just further proves that she is an amazing actress. You can see her expression and body completely change as she's listening to it and the music is inhabiting her. She is so so so great. And this song is great and it just stays with you and god, I'm cheesy. I always feel like such an idiot when I talk about why I love certain songs. Its so hard to use to words to explain. But if you watch that scene in the movie, I think you'll understand what I'm talking about. I wish I was as beautiful as Thora Birch. 10/2/03 Signed, Sealed, Delivered, I'm Yours by Stevie Wonder This was my favorite song when I was in 6th grade. It's so happy and Stevie Wonder rocks. 10/5/03 Everybody's Gonna Be Happy by the Kinks I'm so proud of myself! The last couple songs on here have been happy ones as opposed to the usual depressing stuff I usually put up. Well, this song is about as happy as a song can get. It's from the High Fidelity soundtrack. Great soundtrack. Great movie. Amaaazing book. I'm putting up a picture from the movie, because I like to take any opportunity I can get to put a picture of John Cusack on my website. 10/7/03 Getting Better by the Beatles More happy music. I love the Beatles. (And I love ice) 10/9/03 We Never Change by the Coldplay Hurray for Coldplay. I used to think that they were just kind of a watered down Radiohead, but I've been listening to "Parachutes" non-stop lately, and it is gooooood. 10/11/03 Galapagos by Smashing Pumpkins Such a pretty song. It kind of fits with the problems I'm having with some of my friends right now. I'm always changing. 10/13/03 Don't Think Twice, It's Alright by the Beatles I was all excited this morning because I was listening to my new Bob Dylan cd and this song came on and I didn't know that it was on there and its one of my favorites but then Brandi ruined it for me. "You don't actually like this, do you?" It made me sad. No matter how hard I try, I cannot convince my friends to like Bob Dylan. I've had a few successes with getting people to like Nick Drake, but not poor old Bobby. Speaking of Nick Drake, he did a version of this song, and while he is amazing, no one can touch this song but Bob. 10/15/03 Bohemian Like You by the Dandy Warhols Just a funny song....It reminds me of one of my favorite quotes from Franny and Zooey: "Everything everybody does is so--I don't know--not wrong, or even mean, or even stupid necessarily. But just so tiny and meaningless and--sad making. And the worst part is, if you go bohemian or something crazy like that, you're conforming just as much as everybody else, only in a different way." It's so true! 10/19/03 Thirteen by Big Star I've been listening to my Catcher in the Rye cd all week because I've just been in that kind of mood. I made it about two years ago when I was reading Catcher in the Rye over and over and I put this song is on it because even thought the lyrics don't necessarily go along with the book, but the guy's voice and the guitar just kind of remind me of Holden Caufield's attitude towards people he actually likes. 10/21/03 Baby by Dave Matthews I just listened to my new Dave Matthews cd all the way through for the first time today. This song is sad, but it makes me feel safe and kind of hopeful. Dave Matthews always makes me feel that way. I love it. 10/23/03 Miss Misery by Elliott Smith Elliott Smith killed himself. I nearly had a heart attack when Tracy told me. He was such a sad soul, you know? His songs were so so haunting and aching. I've been listening to some of his songs today, and the lyrics seem to hold a different meaning now that he's gone. Especially in this song... I searched long and hard to find a picture of him where he was genuinely smiling, but I got nothing... 10/25/03 We Are the Champions by Queen Ooooh yeeeaaaah..... Freddie Mercury was GOD. 11/7/03 Trip Through Your Wires by U2 *Sigh* This song is great. People tend to get so caught up in the first three songs of U2's "the Joshua Tree" (Where the Streets Have No Name, Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For, With or Without You), and they end up overlooking all the other really really amazing songs on that album. Listen to this song and love it. 11/19/03 You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go by Bob Dylan My favorite cd right now is Bob Dylan's "Blood on the Tracks". This song is how I feel.... 11.22.03 Rock and Roll by the Velvet Underground I listened to nothing but the Velvet Underground for the 4 days straight this week, and now I'm addicted. This song is one that I definitely relate to. It's about the monotony and bad quality of the music that you usually hear on the radio and it describes how it feels to hear a really good rock song. 11.28.03 Baby It's Cold Outside by Bing Crosby and Doris Day This song is classic. I figured it was time for a little Christmas music because I just feel so damn Christmasy. Now I'm gonna curl up with some hot cocoa and watch It's a Wonderful Life, Home Alone, and Miracle on 34th Street. (Then again....maybe not) 12.1.03 April Fools by Rufus Wainwright This is the song I needed to hear this morning to kick off my week. 12..8.03 Instant Karma by John Lennon I'm putting this song up in memory of John Lennon. Through every bad time of my life, his music has been there for me. I don't know what I would do without it or him. 12.15.03 Wouldn't It Be Nice by the Beach Boys I love the Beach Boys. As I've said before, I'm not too crazy about their surfing and car songs but Brian Wilson really knew how to write a love song. This one and God Only Knows are two of my favorites. Also, I listened to In My Room today and I've decided that the Beach Boys were the original emo band. I know it sounds crazy, but the lyrics and his voice are very emo-ish. Anyway....this is a sweet song. 1.5.04 Nightswimming by REM This is a gorgeous song. I got the best of REM for Christmas and I really love it. They have really good upbeat pop songs, like "Stand" (which, by the way, I can never listen to again thanks to Frankie playing it 30 times in a row...) and then they have beautiful songs like this. 1.12.04 At My Most Beautiful by REM Yet another song in my series of REM and Beach Boys. This song is wonderful, it's REM trying to be Pet Sounds era Beach Boys. I love it. 1.14.04 I'd Be Suprised by Edie Brickell Mmmm....Edie Brickell...I have idolized her since I was a wee girl. Her new c.d. came out this winter, her first in a long time. She's learned how to play guitar since her days with the New Bohemians, and she's experimenting with different types of songwriting. Her voice is still amazing, laid-back and beautiful. She just amazing, what can I say? This song is my favorite from her newest c.d. It's kind of bluesy, kind of melancholy, and just lovely. 1.23.04 Thinking About You by Radiohead This is a good song. And it's the song of the day. 1.25.04 Heroes by David Bowie I love the way David Bowie sings this song. It's good. 1.29.04 I'll Be There by the Jackson 5 Frankie made me a c.d. with a version of this song by the Me First and the Gimmie Gimmies, but I'll always have a soft spot for the original. Listen to that little Wacko Jacko sing! 2.23.04 I've Seen All Good People/Your Move by Yes This song was on the radio yesterday when it was so freakin' beautiful outside and it was just perfect. It felt like summer. |
