Padme Amidala Wedding dress 2004
Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones - Padme Amidala wedding costume recreation
8/2004 by Kathy van Beuningen – modeled by Quincy Newkirk

I have spent over two years working on all aspects of this costume recreation.
I found all of the reference material that I was able and learned what I could about the creation of the actual movie costume.
The costume appears in only the final scene of Star Wars Episode II. Very few still reference pictures of this costume were available.

For the better part of the past two years I have been searching for materials that would be the closest match and have the most compatible feeling to the materials used in the movie costume.
The costume created for the movie was made from a hand-made, one-of-a-kind, antique bedspread that would be impossible to duplicate.
After searching for over a year, I decided that these materials that I have used are the closest to what would be able to represent the spirit of this costume.
I began construction of the headpiece in late 2003 and constructed the coat and dress with in the past two months. Growth issues with Quincy caused me to wait to build this costume since it is a very fitted floor-length dress.

I used home décor materials for the fashion fabric of the dress and coat. The dress is fully lined with a satin lining.
The dress is based on Simplicity pattern #9162 view D. I opted to use the neckline and sleeves of view B. I built the dress as sleeveless, and incorporated the sheer sleeves between the fashion fabric and the sleeve facing.
The coat is based on Simplicity pattern #9533 view A. I omitted the lining since I was using a sheer fabric.
I omitted the shoulder roll and cuffs on the sleeves to allow my version to look more like what I am attempting to recreate.
I used multiple layers of various lace pieces to create the heavily textured ornamentation on the front of the dress and around the front of the coat. I machine basted the larger lace pieces in place and then hand sewed them down. I hand-sewed hundreds of pearls into the lace to add to the opulence of the over-all look.
The headpiece consists of over a dozen mostly hand-made, vintage lace pieces that I repaired and assembled to recreate the look and feeling of the headpiece worn in the movie. I tea-dyed some of the pieces so they would have the aged look, yet be a more consistent ivory/off-white color. I also hand-sewed hundreds of pearls into these pieces. These lace pieces are sewn onto a base.midala costumes 2004

QUINCY NEWKIRK costume contest introduction:

CUE MUSIC before contestant appears on stage

The John Williams, SW Episode II “Across the Stars” will be playing in as back ground music during this entire presentation.
EmCee voice over the presentation:

EmCee:
“ON the eve of her secret marriage, Padmé (PAD-MAY) Amidala (AH-MEE-DOLL-AH) tries on her treasured heirloom wedding costume.”

(Quincy ‘creates’ a full-length mirror mime near the side of the stage in front of the judges table.  She pretends to look at herself in the mirror from all angels, straightening the dress and headpiece and seeing how best to carry her wedding bouquet.  While she is doing this of course, everyone will see all sides of the outfit)

EmCee:
“Hundreds of hand-sewn pearls adorn the multiple layers of imported and hand-made vintage laces to create the heavily textured, opulent ornamentation on the front of the dress, around the front of the coat and on the headpiece.”

(Padmé’s joy is disturbed by an ominous vision. A shadowy figure, in Darth Sidious’s cloak, cane, black face mask --steps onto the stage from one side slowly moving towards Padmé.  Padmé sees the ‘vision’, approaches cautiously.)

EmCee:
“She knows her union with Anakin Skywalker is forbidden.  Padme debates whether to seek the permission of the Jedi Council---however, they would never approve of this marriage.”

(The figure extends a hand.  Padme reaches for it reluctantly, grabs onto it.......and the hand pulls away.  This is where we discover that it is Anakin’s golden mechanical hand. Padme looks at it in shock.......while the ominous figure disappears off stage. )

EmCee:
“If she asks for Anakin’s hand in marriage------that may be ALL she gets!”

(Padme holds the bouquet in one hand and the mechanical hand in her other looking at each.  She closes her eyes, turns around and tosses the bouquet over her shoulder and then exits the stage area)
