The Senate costume was the first Queen Amidala costume I made in the summer of 1999. I knew I HAD to try to make one of these costumes after the first time I saw Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace. I had started making the costume as a Halloween costume for Quincy to wear to the school costume contest. I spent months looking for the "right" materials and fabrics to try to make this. I spent weeks putting it together....Needless to say, she won the school costume contest. I decided to see if there were any other contests we could participate in and came across the City of Chicago's Navy Pier costume contest. Quincy enter the children's contest 6-12 and won first place. The prize was two round-trip airfares to anywhere in the continental U.S. We decided that we wanted to go to Hollywood and see where movies are made. We had an excellent vacation! Amoung other activities, we spent two days at Paramount Studios on the sets of Star Trek Voyager. |
The Smithsonian's Star Wars Magic of Myth exhibit traveled to Chicago in 2000. We were going to join members of the Midwest 501st in costume at the Field Museum for the opening of the exhibit on July 15th 2000. I had been planning on just wearing our costumes that I had already made. Then I had the horrible thought of trying to wear those winter-weight costumes in the middle of the hot summer ion the un-airconditioned Field Museum in Chicago. I decided to make new costumes that were much lighter weight including a new Queen Amidala costume for Quincy. I chose the parade costume, since I could make this out of the lightest weight materials. Quincy was also pleased that the head-piece was a bit smaller on this costume, but she ended up complaining quite a bit when she needed to have her hair twisted into all of the small buns. We had such a magical time at the museum that we went back several times in costume and got to know many of our local area 501st members quite well. We were very sad when the exhibit closed, since we had so many wonderful days and memories. |
I made Quincy several other costumes towards the end of 2000, including this Padme Episode I battle costume. She really liked to wear this costume while on her 'down-time' between the more elborate costumes. I also made her a Princess Leia, A New Hope costume before the exhibit left Chicago. She had a wonderful time stealing the stormtroopers' blasters & chasing them all around the museum. Here, she is taking a walk with her "father". More event pictures coming soon! |
This is my first Padme/Amidala costume from Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones. I am nowhere near accurate on this one. I may re-do it sometime, but it worked out well for my sister's wedding and as an other no-so-fussy costume to wear around the museums and conventions. |
In 2001, we were finally able to go to some of the major conventions around the country. I had been wanting to make the black costume since I had finished the Senate costume back in 1999, but I could not figure out how to makesome of the key pieces, so the project was put on hold until early 2001 when I decided I finally needed a serger. I spent my vacation learning how to use the machine and making the headpiece for this costume. After that, I was too far into it to turn back, so I made myself figure out how to make it work. The costume was finally ready to wear for AlphaCon2001 in Omaha, NE in May 2001. Quincy's Queen Amidala won first place in the children's costume contest. In August, we entered the GenCon (in Milwaukee, WI) costume contest, where Quincy won best children's codtume and over-all Best-of-Show. In September, she won Best Children's costume at DragonCon2001in Atlanta, GA. In October, she won first place in the the Navy Pier contest in Chicago, so we have airline tickets again. She also marched in the City of Chicago's parade, met Svengoolie at the City's costume contest, went to the Magic of Myth Exhibit at the Toledo Museum of Art twice and hung out with the 501st at many events. We spent a day at Kiddieland in Chicago. We played with the troopers at a jail-and-bail event in September. We were at WizardWorld in Chicago for one day.The best part of participating in all of these events though, was meeting all sorts of nice people. We had such a great time wearing our costumes! I can't wait to do it again this year! |
