| Magical Realism: A Problem Is there a problem with Magical Realism as a literary device? Before you begin your final task, click on the question mark above and read the selection. Then read "I Am Not a Magic Realist" by Alberto Fuguet. Reflecting on what you have learned, do you think Magical Realism is, indeed, a problem? |
| The Situation: Influential members of a notable literary society have decided that Magical Realism is truly a problem. In fact, they do not want high school students to read works by writers such as Isabel Allende, Alberto Rios, Gabriel Garcia Marquez, and Pablo Neruda. This society feels that Magical Realism encourages inappropriate use of language and unrealistic storytelling. You have decided to write a speech to deliver during the public comment portion of their next meeting in which you agree or disagree that all writing involving Magical Realism should be banned. Your Task: Using relevant information from this WebQuest (at least 2 sources), write a speech to be given to members of the literary society in which you agree or disagree with the banning of Magical Realism. (If needed, click on the writers' pictures above to review any information.) Guidelines: Be Sure to *Tell your audience what they need to know about Magical Realism *Indicate whether you agree or disagree with banning Magical Realism *Use specific, accurate, and relevant information from at least two sources from this WebQuest *Use a tone and level of language appropriate for speech for members of the literary community. *Organize your ideas in a logical and coherent manner *Indicate any words taken directly from the text by using quotation markes or referring to the author *Follow the conventions of standard written English |
