Shinji Ikari

First Appearence: Episode 1
The third child. The pilot of Eva 01
Although he is the son of Ikari Gendou, the head of NERV, Shinji feels very strange towards Gendou. Gendou left Shinji since Shinji was very small, and they haven't met each other for a long time. Conversely, he and his guardian Katsuragi Misato acts like son and mother. They treat each other very well. When Shinji first came to NERV, he is self abased and lacks confidence. However, as he gains more experience in fighting against Angels, plus the help from Misato, he gradually becomes more confident.

Rei Ayanami

First Appearence: Episode 1
The first child. Pilot of Eva 00
All her previous records have been erased. Unlike other young girls, she seldom speaks and shows her feeling to other people. Probably the only one she cares is Ikari Gendou, the "Commander Ikari" as she referred. (She calls Ikari Shinji "Ikari-kun".) She only shows her smile towards Gendou. They treat each other like father and daughter. Also, her apartment is a mess. The area around the apartment is dirty and noisy. Using Akagi Ritsuko's words, "She's not good at living." Does Rei love Shinji? It seems that the answer is "Yes". She has been saving Shinji more than once, and even when she did self-destruction she said "I want to unite with Ikari-kun." (In Japan to unite with a person means marriage or sexual intercourse.)

Asuka

First Appearence: Episode 8
The second child. She is 1/4 japanese and 3/4 german. Pilot of Eva 02
She comes to Japan with Kaji Ryouji, and with her Eva-02 of course. Unlike Rei, she is active, positive, and self-motivated. Also, she is very proud of her skills as an Eva pilot. Although she hit Shinji at the first time she met him, she likes him as time goes by, and started "chasing" him. Shinji likes her a lot too. Once when Asuka blamed Shinji that he forgot to make lunch boxes for her, their classmate Touji said it is " the quallel between wife and husband".
