Character
and Personality
The
following paragraphs concern the study of Tom's personality, as
induced by the positions of the planets and Rising sign. Some of the
character traits mentioned may seem completely contradictory and
incompatible. This is because the rough-hewn personality is a
rarity. Usually, individuals are made up of a subtle orchestration
of many different tones or aspects. However, serious introspection
or detailed analysis should make it possible to distinguish the
opposing or diverging images comprising Tom's overall character, and
perhaps, in time, find the best and most harmonious way to integrate
them.
The specificity of Tom's personality can be summed up by his
nostalgic yearning for his roots - a " paradise lost "
which is also a source of energy and vitality. Tom's power is linked
to memory: he inhabits a present which draws sustenance from the
past, from continuity and timelessness. The power of memory can
either be dynamic or static, however. The consciousness of an
inaccessible past can either immobilize him in melancholy and
nostalgia, or shine as an ideal which motivates him to recreate a
new harmony. His attitude and approach to the past are of key
importance. If he thinks of it as a refuge, his obsession with it
may be such that his progress is impeded. If, on the contrary, he
thinks of it as a starting point or launching pad for his
comprehension of the human condition, he will integrate it into his
self-realization process. Tom possesses a potential for great
maturation and wisdom. He is relatively slow-moving, and may feel
protected from the outer world by an armor of education, family
surroundings (his most cherished environment), and social status.
For this reason, he tends to limit the scope of his activities to a
single well-defined sphere, and, within the boundaries he has
established, releases the entire spectrum of his rich and varied
emotional expression. Sometimes he may feel overwhelmed by the
prospect of situations which will introduce him to unfamiliar
factors and elements; he see them as intrusions. Before he judges an
event, a person, or a thing, he attempts to absorb it into his
private universe. Of a fairly subjective and introverted turn of
mind, he defines everything in terms of the sensation it arouses in
him as his consciousness embraces it. This predominance of sensation
gives him extreme sensory finesse: his perceptions are intense,
keen, penetrating right to the heart of people and things. His
imagination, which is a function of his perceptions, is also lively,
colorful, and prolific. Because he is sometimes self-centered,
attentive to and protective of his inner self, he may tend to
withdraw into his shell when he encounters an aggression from the
outer world. As a result, he may sometimes become distant and
secretive. His tendency to be rather short-tempered and easily
offended, a classic flaw, is also the consequence of his need for
protection and security. Despite his sensitivity, and his ability to
be genuinely virtuous, Tom is not always gentle. His outbreaks of
hostility are all the more wounding because of their rarity.
However, more than aggressiveness, Tom's stubbornness, slow
insistence, and undying determination are the extremes which may
complicate his life. Once again, the family setting is vitally
important to him. His attachment to his family in general and his
mother in particular is deep. The way he resolves (or has resolved)
the transition to adulthood and independence will be crucial to his
well-being, both in terms of his inner harmony (the sensation and
sensitivity which comprise his identity) and in terms of his
relationships with women.
Due to the influence of Cancer rising, Tom is a dreamer, sensitive
and sentimental, with a lively imagination. He tends to be somewhat
passive and submissive. He is extremely attached to his family, and
his childhood memories are the basis of many a reverie and much of
his self-image; they rule a significant part of his psyche. Although
he is self-centered and fairly confident, it is difficult for him to
deal with unfamiliar situations, and he sometimes feels poorly
equipped to struggle for survival in life. In truth, however, his
resources include great personal charm as well as tenacity and
loyalty. He is best matched with Capricorn partners, who are likely
to help him capitalize on his sensitivity and memory.
Tom is a pleasure-lover and will find self-fulfillment in creative
activities.
Tom has a strong personality; he is sometimes a little
self-centered. His fate is in his own hands!
At the time of Tom's birth, both his Rising Sign and Sun Sign
were located in the constellation of Cancer (the Crab). This
alignment will probably yield a certain cohesiveness for his
personality. A summary of the various clues mentioned above provide
Tom's personality profile; the following key words distill the
essence of his character and indicate certain contradictions which
may be sources of tension:
Sensitivity - Imagination - Eccentricity - Savings and thrift -
Suspicion - Obstinacy - Premonition.
Driven by his extreme sensitivity, Tom is likely to form intense and
lasting emotional bonds. He has a great appetite for love, esteem,
and appreciation. His sense of personal dignity and his jealousy
sometimes confuse honor with dignity; as a result, he is
simultaneously short-tempered and conciliating, possessive yet
impressionable. Naturally reserved and even wary of others, he will
not surrender to his partner until after he has tested her patience
to the limits. Once he is certain he is safe, however, he will form
an exclusive and lifelong bond. Nevertheless, he will always be
easily offended. Everything related to the family, children,
heritage, religious ritual and custom, sentiment, and honor will be
sacred to this conformist. His determination will be forged by an
instinct for preservation and respect for history. He avoids
confronting obstacles face-to-face, preferring to deal with them by
means of a strategy elaborated well in advance. If a crisis arises
unexpectedly, he is likely to take cover until it passes. However,
his problem-solving techniques are notable for their tireless
persistence and seemingly infinite patience. His success will be due
to his stubbornness.
Born in the three days after the rising of the New Moon, Tom is said
to be a " New Moon " lunar type. This " soli-lunar
" configuration gives him a subjective character, somewhat
impulsive and sometimes emotive. Generally, he does not see the
world in objective terms; instead, he bases his attitude on the
feelings various situations arouse inside him. Likewise, in human
relationships, he tends to project his imaginary reality onto others
instead of seeing them for what they are. As a result, his
judgements and reasoning are sometimes deprived of perspective. He
should make an effort to refrain from overinterpreting other
people's actions, because, being the product of his imagination in
most cases, his interpretations are mistaken. If he applies himself
to listening more openly, people may reveal their deeper
motivations. He'll be happier and more effective as a result.
Warm and affable, Tom is animated by honesty and generosity. Due to
the solar dominant of his birth chart, his father (or a man who
served as a father figure, possibly a teacher) influenced him
strongly and imprinted him with the positive values which are now at
the core of his being. However, his perception and comprehension of
the world are filtered through an innate ability for artistic
discrimination: a sense of aesthetics. For him, " beauty "
is " truth " - and not vice-versa. Style and harmony, and
the skills involved with putting things on display, such as artistic
representation, light, and transparence, are concepts which come
naturally to him, and he makes use of them in his life.
Temperament
The
graph below reveals the various influences on Tom's nature in
relation to the percentage value of each element. These values were
calculated according to the number of planets and the hierarchical
position of each one (dominant, luminary, etc.). The basic
personality tendencies as described here will no doubt be
counteracted to some degree by the environmental, psychological, or
emotional needs outlined in the next chapter. Nevertheless, they
form the roots of his psyche, anchoring it as it grows and develops.
Tom seeks to make his inner wealth outwardly manifest and
substantial.
Tom's tendency to introversion inclines him to live inside himself,
amid his inner world. He is apt to listen to his subjectivity, his
intuition, and his secret opinions rather than reason and logic.
Tom's uppermost concern is his personal, subjective interest.
Because the development of his personal identity requires great
individual freedom of action, he tries to free himself from outer
restraints and limitations. Psychologically self-centered, he
remains fairly detached from the social world; he reduces such
commitments to the strict minimum. Individualistic and egocentric,
he derives his feelings of inner security from his ability to
command his will and handle his personal involvement's freely and
openly.
Tom is self-centered and sees everything in relation to himself.
Individualistic and fairly egotistical, he finds he is rarely of the
same opinion as others, and may tend to isolate himself from the
outer world. On the other hand, he is gifted with the ability to
concentrate on whatever subject is really important to him, which
would enable him to acquire expertise in any professional domain he
chose. But first he would have to overcome his initial subjectivity.
Sentimental and emotional, Tom lives in a world which is in
continual contact with his dreams and subconscious. He cannot live
without love, and, like water which flows into and takes on the
shape of the vessel which contains it, he is always ready to
submerge himself in another person. Stirred by forces he does not
control, he may be aroused by passions which are impervious to the
restraints of reason and logic. He is an emotive creature in harmony
with the flow of his feelings, impulses, and urges.
Tom is not in natural harmony with the physical world and the
limitations and restraints it places upon him. Idealistic, he tends
to be somewhat disconnected from practical considerations, and
barely pays any attention to material things like food, money, his
surroundings, and so on. He yields to a tendency to be footloose and
fancy-free, oblivious to the necessities of survival in the physical
world, until his lack of material resources - an issue to which he
granted no importance - becomes an emergency. This feeling of being
out of touch with material things and the physical dimension of
reality may sometimes lead him to see himself as unfitted for this
world. He may think he cannot attach himself to any roots which
would sustain his efforts at self-expression. However, his
impractical nature offers many positive aspects. He sees life's
possibilities as limitless. He is apt to develop his imagination or
pursue a spiritual quest in order to transcend the material world.
Tom lives chiefly in the moment and expresses his energies
immediately, tempered by the circumstances. Always on the move, he
is unconsciously seeking a point of stability and balance which
eludes him. The skills he displays as a mover and doer, as a leader,
are animated by basic feelings of insecurity. As a result, at some
times in his life, his ambition may overpower his emotions.
Psychological
Analysis
The
following psychological study is a " blind " analysis
which cannot take into consideration factors proper to Tom's social
background or education. Nevertheless, it describes the basic
structure and dynamic of his psyche as the result of an interplay of
various influences; that is, without confining it to certain
categories or arbitrarily putting a label on it. Certain
contradictions may appear, but they are an integral part of the
paradoxes and ambivalence of his nature. It is impossible for us to
predict which tendency will win out: that will depend on Tom's
decision.
Consciousness and The ideal of Self:
Tom senses that he has instincts which may be dangerous, and he
tries to restrain and control them. As a result, he may adopt a
fairly ascetic lifestyle. His attitude, which denies the vital
importance of the most archaic and darkest forces within him, is not
entirely innocuous. If he hopes for a more harmonious development,
Tom will have to realize that instincts can be tamed; they do not
react positively to being trampled.
Tom has a paternal complex and, as a result, some trouble finding
his identity. Perhaps his father was absent physically or
emotionally during his childhood, which deprived him of the patterns
or models which are usually helpful in structuring a personality.
Because he lacked the security which is often provided by a paternal
presence, as well as the examples of behavior to follow in
confronting the difficulties inherent in every life, he was force to
protect himself against negative influences and find his own system
in order to grow and feel secure. Although this system was quite
useful to him as a childhood, it has now settled in to such a degree
that it interferes with his evolution. Psychological defense
mechanisms and crutches which were once useful now encumber his mind
or inhibit his developmental efforts. As a result, in certain
situations, it is difficult for him to assert himself, and he tends
to remain an awkward or passive observer. Because his authoritarian
urges are mainly directed at himself rather than others, he
sometimes feels guilty about his behavior. He judges himself
severely, and sometimes punishes himself by setting difficult tasks
for himself. Gradually, he should build up a strong inner discipline
and acquire the strength to face the problems of existence in a
detached and mature way.
Tom has great strength of character. His courage and endurance
enable him to accomplish even extremely arduous tasks. Although he
sometimes behaves impulsively, he generally knows how to plan out an
effective strategy and, as a result, reaches his goals without
meeting any major obstacles. His forcefulness gives him certain
leadership skills, which he may implement to creative and
constructive ends.
Adaptation and Sensitivity:
An eloquent speaker and compulsive charmer, Tom has a powerful
personal magnetism which may sometimes make him seem arrogant or
smug. He cares a great deal about his reputation, and will try hard
to be admired and appreciated by the people around him. Fond of
social events and parties, he likes to be the host, to entertain and
charm a captive audience of guests. Indeed, he has special dramatic
and artistic talents of the caliber necessary for success in film,
theater, fashion, or art in general. He enjoys displaying his
generosity, but he also displays a short temper at times; he is
easily offended. His partner will have to be a brilliant woman,
strong and sure of herself, devoted to her hero and capable of
enhancing his reputation.
Tom is hyperemotional and tends to react suddenly and excessively as
soon as his sensitivity is touched. Although he feels that his
independence, freedom, and self-sufficiency are fundamental values,
he is sometimes frustrated by his need to rely on his family or his
friends. Moreover, he does not always grant the freedom of other
people the same respect as his own. Likewise, he is sometimes
angered by expressions of maternal tenderness and femininity (in his
partner and women in general), as if he feared that it would doom
him to eternal dependency, although femininity is the element which
unconsciously lured him into the relationship in the first place.
His ambivalent and baffling behavior, full of jagged edges, may be
traced back to the relationship he had with his mother. Although he
was dependent on her, he may have rejected her. Now this attitude is
extended to any situation in which his sensitivity comes into play
and emotional bonds are liable to form. To ward off his feelings of
dependency, he sometimes tends to become furiously destructive.
Based on denial, his reactions are sometimes fierce, impulsive, and
excessive, and usually erratic or contradictory.
Due to his extreme sensitivity and irrepressible imagination, Tom
sometimes has trouble distinguishing dreams from reality. Although
his bubbling imagination provides an abundant source of inspiration
for creative or spiritual evolution, it tends to be less helpful and
positive in matters that concern his self-assertion as a responsible
and self-sufficient adult member of society. In a relationship, he
is extremely romantic, and does not always see others the way they
really are.
Love and Sensuality:
Tom enjoys captivating people with the elegance and ease of his
expression. He is a witty and engaging flirt, an avid player of the
game of love. As a result, the history of his affections is liable
to be episodic, a long series of chapters about conquests or
fleeting love affairs. He may carry on some love relationships by
writing letters.
Tom's birth chart indicates a somewhat introverted emotional
function which is influenced by the cultural values traditional to
his family and social class. Because he does not always trust his
emotional urges and reactions, Tom generally prefers to hang back
and acquire some perspective before committing himself emotionally.
Tom's emotional involvement are somewhat problematic, which is the
source of some dissatisfaction for him. The usual romantic behavior
and the lifestyle values prevailing in this area are not really
appropriate for him. As a result, he seeks few intimate emotional
relationships or contacts. He tends to stay in the background and
fulfill his emotional needs by sublimating. He will not attain full
romantic satisfaction until he reaches middle age.
Tom's proud but sensitive personality is extremely attractive and
wins him a multitude of amorous successes. Ruled at times by a
narcissistic longing, he is attracted to exceptionally beautiful or
socially prominent women. From conquest to conquest, affair to
affair, his emotional life may be a series of brief flashes of love
which prove to be disappointingly fleeting. But, one day, he may
allow himself to be subjugated by a woman with a strong personality,
powerful ambition, and a great deal of influence on him. His home
and children might then become a foundation for his stability.
As we suggested earlier, Tom is fairly indecisive about his
emotions. Although he has engaged in a variety of experiments in
order to know himself and his preferences better, he still finds
himself unable to make a commitment. He tends to be somewhat
happy-go-lucky, yielding to whatever opportunity circumstances
present, and may maintain several relationships simultaneously. It
may not necessarily be easy for him to establish a lasting
commitment, but it is not impossible.
Tom has the fiery, importunate nature of a fervent lover. Indeed,
affairs of the heart are one of his main purposes in life. His
personal charm and magnetism are compellingly seductive;
unfortunately, his attempts at conquest do not always lead to the
fulfillment and satisfaction of his desires. Due to his
impulsiveness and impatience to initiate new encounters, his
approach to members of the other sex may sometimes lack tact and
delicacy. As a result of the foregoing, it may be somewhat difficult
for him to maintain stable and harmonious relationships. Indeed, his
emotional behavior is subject to a conflict between his quest for
love and his need to satisfy his lust. His outpourings of affection
and his need to be loved in return sometimes create complicated
situations in which lust may be confused with love, or love may
exist without lust, and he may feel unrequited or unfulfilled. This
inner contradition is a sign of his tendency to derive pleasure from
suffering: either his own, or that of his partner. The relationship
thus becomes the setting for a sort of power struggle, weakening it
as a source of psychological equilibrium. Nevertheless, Tom could
sublimate this difficulty through artistic expression.
Tom has a great emotional ideal, full of subtlety and tenderness.
However, he tends to be overwhelmed by his imagination, and may not
be selective enough when choosing a partner. His romantic and
trusting nature may make him vulnerable. Although he strives to
establish peaceful, uncomplicated relations, he sometimes
experiences painful disappointments. His artistic delicacy and
refinement provide him with a sincere love of the arts, music, and
literature. He is likely to be a gifted poet.
Mental and intellect:
Tom's intellect, which is simultaneously subjective and sensitive,
acute and intuitive, always practical and deeply rooted in human
experience, predisposes him to a people-oriented activity. With his
memory and imagination combined with his shrewdness, he would be a
gifted project manager, businessman, or scholar of history or
literature.
Tom expresses his thoughts and ideas in direct, spontaneous
outbursts. He is fairly extroverted, and eager to discover and
understand the outer world. An idealist, he looks forward to a
bright future, but is sometimes subjective and reckless.
Energy and Ability to take Action:
Tom's vitality and combativeness emerge in an unpredictable and
sometimes chaotic way. Ruled by his emotiveness, but also inspired
by his keen intuition, his behavior and approach to the business of
life sometimes baffle those close to him. He is quite comfortable in
a relationship due to his instinctive understanding of human
relations. He quickly establishes intense and lasting friendships.
