The Police Officers
listed below are just 3 of the many brave Officers and Firefighters who
gave the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty on 9/11/01. Their bravery
saved thousands of lives in this tragedy. Two of the three began their
careers in the Transit Police. The third came on the job after the merge
but worked in the Transit Bureau. Two were partners. All three include
District 4 as places that they worked. All are hero's and will never be
forgotten.
Police Officer
Moira Smith
Police Officer Moira A. Smith, 38, was appointed to the
Transit Police Department on July 11, 1988, and was assigned to Transit
Districts 2, 4, and 30 before being transferred to the 13 Precinct in
march 1996. Prior to becoming a Police Officer, she worked in the travel
industry. While working in Transit District 4, she met her husband, PO
James Smith, who is currently assigned to the Police Academy. Besides
being an avid sports fan, PO Smith and her husband loved to travel. A
recent destination was Spain, where they ran with the bulls in 1995. PO
Smith is survived by her husband, daughter Patricia, and sister Mary.
Police Officer
Ramon Suarez
Police Officer Ramon Suarez, 45, was appointed to the
Transit Police Department on January 20, 1987, and worked in Transit
District 4, Transit Borough Manhattan Task Force, and the Highway District
before transferring back to District 4 in March 2000. He and his partner,
PO Mark Ellis, were both killed while responding to the World Trade Center
incident. A graduate of the Manhattan School of Graphic Arts and Design,
PO Suarez was a few credits shy of a bachelor's degree from Pace
University. A physical fitness enthusiast, he had received numerous
trophies and awards for his expertise in karate. PO Suarez is survived by
his wife Carmen, children Jillian, Sophia, and Ramon jr. Parents Marina
and Raul, sisters Margarita and Milagros, and brother Raul.
Police Officer
Mark Ellis
Police Officer Mark J. Ellis, 26, was appointed to the
NYPD on December 8, 1997, and spent his entire career assigned to Transit
Bureau, District 4. He and his partner, PO Ramon Suarez, were both killed
while responding to the World Trade Center incident. A graduate of the
State University of New York at Farmingdale, PO Ellis was an avid
outdoorsman whose interests included snowboarding, fishing, and bicycle
riding. He is survived by his parents Elaine and Joseph, and sister
Tammy.
