WHEN DO YOU NEED A LAWYER?
Knowing when you need a lawyer can often save you more trouble and money.
AN OUNCE OF PREVENTION . . .
You've heard it before: An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure ...

Most people believe that the time to hire a lawyer is when a problem comes up. But, the best time to see a lawyer is BEFORE legal trouble starts. Just as preventive medicine can go a long way to prevent illness, preventive law can go a long way to avoid costly and worrisome legal problems.
BENEFITS OF PREVENTIVE LAW
The benefits are reaped by those persons who obtain legal advice at the beginning of the transaction. If you wait until after the deal is closed and all of a sudden there are misunderstandings or arguments about who is supposed to do what, you will probably end up in an expensive lawsuit. By paying a few hundred or even a few thousand dollars to a lawyer to review your papers BEFORE YOU SIGN, and advise you so you know exactly what you are getting into, you will likely save tens of thousands of dollars paying a lawyer to represent you in a lawsuit. Preventive law does not always keep you out of a lawsuit, since if you have little or no control over what someone else might do. However, it can help eliminate many of the lawsuits that are filed today.
"YES" MEANS YOU NEED A LAWYER
Answering "YES" to any of the following questions means you probably need a lawyer.

  • Have you tried to fix the problem by talking directly to the "other side" and failed?
  • Are you being threatened with legal action by a person or situation?
  • Do you need someone who can go to bat for you, to speak on your behalf?
  • Have you been served with papers? (summons, subpoenas, warrants?)
  • Does the "other side" have a lawyer?
  • Is the possible result greater than the cost of hiring a lawyer?
  • Are you involved in a transaction that is very important to you?
  • Are you (or your child/spouse) involved in the criminal law system?
