Learning to Love Again Chapter 3 |

Alena took a deep breath. This was it, this was the beginning of what might lead to be her new life. She looked down at what she wore making sure that her navy blue business suit was immaculate. Her whole outfit was new with a cream colored shirt opened at the neck revealing a simple silver chain with a locket on its end. She touched her hair, it was still in its simple french twist at the nape of her neck. Taking out her compact mirror she confirmed that all her subtle make-up was impeccable. Another breath brought her hand to knock on the office door that read ‘Louis Walsh’. The name meant nothing to her other than the faint promise of her future employer. “Come in” a voice called from inside. Compose and confident she walked in with her head held high. Her composure added age to her actual years. Louis Walsh looked at her. This girl definitely had the confidence for the job he thought. In fact her confidence startled him as it went beyond her young age. She was no more than 20 at a glance. “Hello, I’m Alena Chiu. I’m here for the interpreters job.” “Yes I know. Well can I have your CV please?” looking it over it he realized that she was only 18. This was surprising. She looked above her age, her manner stating of one much older and a professional would. How was he to know that her maturity came from many tears and heartache and that the only thing keeping her confidence and composure so cool was the determination not to go back to what she had left behind. She was here to stay. He read on. She had passed New Zealand’s Bursary exam in French, Japanese, English, Physics and Biology. All with very good marks. She was also Chinese so her chinese would be useful in Asia. Overall she was a good candidate for the job other than that she was only 18 and had no college degree. But they needed someone really quickly as their last interpreter had decided he needed a break and had ditched them unexpectedly. “So tell me Miss Chiu. Why do you think I should give you the job?” “Well for starters, Mr Walsh, I’m good with languages. You are looking for an interpreter. I’m fully confident that I can fulfill that requirement of the job despite my age. I may be young but I know I can handle the job and am totally capable. Besides you seem to be in a hurry to find one. I think you should give me a go and well if it doesn’t work out, you can find someone else.” Louis thought over what she said. This girl had guts. “Miss Chiu are you good with dealing with publicity and public appearances?” “Well I’m not phobic of them and I’ve never tried. But I won’t think it would have much of an effect on me.” Alena thought over his question. Strange, she thought. What had public appearances got to do with interpreting? Oh well... I won’t think about it right now. “That is good then. Well I’ll see you then Miss Chiu. It was a good interview.’ He rose to shake her hand “and Miss Chiu, welcome on board.” “Thank-you Mr Walsh. You won’t regret you decision.” answered Alena feeling that her knees were about to buckle. She had done it, she had got a job. “Miss Chiu-” “Please, now you’re my employer. Call me Alena” Smiling Louis marveled at the courage of this young woman. “Alena. I will require you to go to the Dublin Royal Hotel tomorrow morning at 9am. Oh you need to bring all your things so that you can move in immediately. There’s no point for you to be living elsewhere. You can make it? Also I want you to meet the people you are translating for.” “No problems. I know where it is. I’ll see you tomorrow then. Goodbye” “Bye” Back at her hotel Alena collapsed onto her bed. The beginning of her new life had given birth. This is it she thought. No turning back. |
