| Toni yanked her hand free away from Mark once they reached the garden. ‘What the hell was that all about?’ she demanded, hands on her hips. She was still perplexed, having no idea what she should say or what she should do. Her small dark brown eyes flashed with indignation yet with a glint of confusion hiding behind it. Mark wondered how she could be so sweet then so fiery at one moment. And what’s more mind-boggling, was that she had something quite amusing and enchanting inside her when she was angry. And he absolutely adored it. ‘Toni, I’m so sorry. I know I’m not at all like that… I just couldn’t help myself! You see, I still love you and I want you back and…’ ‘But why did you do that?’ she said, her voice getting louder. ‘For all you know, I could already be going out with someone else.’ She added quietly. Mark felt as if the wind was suddenly knocked off from his lungs, and a sharp icicle had just been hammered into his heart. ‘Are you?’ he asked, barely able to speak. Toni remained quiet, folding her arms across her chest as she cast her eyes to the ground. Mark repeated the question. She looked him in the eyes, the corners of her mouth twitching. Mark felt tears stinging his eyes. ‘No.’ Toni whispered, suddenly grinning. ‘Oh God… no… not this… I can’t take this! Two months away from you was hell, but to hear that you’re going out with… with… hold on a sec.’ Mark said, scratching his head. ‘What did you say?’ he asked, a grin slowly forming on his lips. ‘I said no, I’m not going out with anyone.’ Toni said, smiling mischievously. ‘Toni! God, you almost gave me a heart attack!’ Mark said, laughing nervously. His laughter died down after a few minutes, and silence swept across them. Only the sweet chirping of the birds could be heard, along with the soft rustling of leaves as a gentle breeze blew through them. ‘Toni…’ Mark whispered huskily, taking her hands in his. ‘I’m really sorry about what happened back there. Call me desperate if you want, but I just wanted you back terribly. I miss you so much, I can’t even concentrate on my work… everything was starting to fall apart. I really do miss you and God knows I would do anything and everything to have you back.’ Mark said, blushing at his corny attempt to make her see how much he needed her. ‘You don’t have to do much Mark. All you have to do is ask.’ Toni said, smiling shyly at him. Mark wrapped his arms around her and kissed her. How much had he missed that! He kissed her like there was no tomorrow, and she eagerly responded. When they finally pulled apart, both of them were breathing so heavily. ‘Toni… you know, you gave me quite a scare back there.’ Mark whispered into her ear. He still held her close in his arms. “Hmm?’ Toni asked, quite dazed at how delicious Mark’s kisses felt. ‘Yeah… you know, when you told me that you might be going out with someone else.’ ‘Oh… really?’ she asked, kissing the tip of his nose. ‘Yeah… really.’ Said Mark, laughing softly. ‘Aww… baby, you don’t have to be scared at all. No one can ever take your place you know. There’s nobody else for me.’ Toni reassured Mark, wrapping her arms a bit tighter around his waist. ‘Nobody?’ he asked, looking deep into her eyes. ‘Nobody… nobody but you.’ |
