Becky looked around at the familiar surroundings. She knew this place as if she lived here on a permanent basis; behind the second door on the right was the x-ray room, behind that door over there was the doctors’ office and if you walk down the corridor on the left you’d get to the coffee machine and the small cafeteria. Visitors and hospital staff were constantly walking up and down the corridors, but hardly anyone paid her attention. Just some of the doctors, passing her, gave her a recognisingly nod and looked at her as if to say: ‘I’m really sorry to see you back here again.’ But she was… she was back… She then saw a female doctor walking towards her. “Are you Miss Rebecca Taylor?” Becky had been asked that question by a doctor before, but this time she had this feeling inside of her, that the reason for the question was different. Unfortunately her female intuition had never been too good… “Yes… yes I am…” she hesitatingly answered and was just about to stand up, but when she saw the look in the doctor’s eyes, she understood that it would be better if she remained seated, so she did. “I’m really, really sorry… We did all we could, but unfortunately we weren’t able to save your brother…” “Wha’… what do you mean?” “I’m afraid he’s dead, Miss…” At that very moment Becky felt her whole world falling apart. It was as if the ground vanished from under her, like it had done so many times before, and she just fell and fell and there was no stopping. There was no way she’d ever get up this time… Not by herself, but she had no one left to help her, she was all alone… “No, no…” she whispered, “No God, don’t do this to me, not again… I can’t go through this again…” The doctor went over, sat down beside her and placed her arm around Becky’s shoulders, but Becky shrugged it off. “Please, please just leave me alone for a while… I just… I just need to be alone…” the doctor gave her a comforting hug and stood up to leave. “I understand, I’ll be just down the hall if you need me.” She disappeared into a room and left Becky with her own thoughts. No tears fell from her eyes. It was as if she didn’t have any more tears to share, she had used them all during the last three years. Three years ago Becky and her family had moved from Los Angeles to London and even though Becky was only 17 years old at the time and had to leave all her friends behind, she loved the idea of moving. They all settled in very fast and everything seemed to be perfect, Becky had met a girl who lived just outside London and they had become great friends. It was as if she and Anna had known each other all of their lives, they had so much in common and most importantly; they shared the same sense of humour. But it’s like they say: ‘Nothing lasts forever.’ She remembered the phone call she got from the hospital as if it happened yesterday, when it in fact was two and a half year ago. They told her that Anna had been hit by a car and that she had asked for Becky to come and see her. Using her last strength Anna had told the doctors that she wanted to, no, she had to see her best friend before she died. Of course Becky had rushed to the hospital, but she got there too late. ‘I’m afraid she past away ten minutes ago…’ She got through the lost of her best friend with the help of her parents and older brother. They gave her the strength she needed to move on. But who would help her now when she lost her beloved brother? Anna wasn’t there to help her and because some drunk idiot decided to take the car home that night one and a half year ago her parents weren’t there to help either. She had lost everybody close to her. In just three years the four most important people in her life had gone off to a better place and left her all alone in this huge struggle, called life. |
