Casca - Sgt.Casey Romain - one of the many US army soldiers in Vietnam, has been wounded in a Vietcong ambush. All the other members of his squad have been killed except for one, and he is butchered by the Viets at the orders of their commander, Ho van Tuyen. Casca vows revenge before Ho orders his death, and the eternal mercenary is left for dead. When he came back to life, he decided to follow the trail of those Vietcong, and tracks them to a mountain village where Ho has left three of his men to garrison it. Casca takes care of them and pursues his quarry back to Ho's base. Ho, meanwhile, is planning to unleash a campaign of terror onto the Americans and South Vietnamese with a squad of trained assassins from his jungle hideout. He sends his aide, Troung, to his superiors with a set of papers detailing the plan. Casca ambushes Troung and takes the papers. He is chased back towards friendly territory and is picked up by helicopter and flown back to base. There, a Colonel Tomlin and Captain Gomez read the death list and decide to launch a counter-terrorist operation, using Casca as one of their unit, particularly after Tomlin narrowly escapes being killed by a Vietcong agent. Casca requests that two special people be seconded; a South Viet called Van and a Kamserai bandit called Phang. Ho puts his plan into operation and Tomlin panics, using his influence to have Phang flown in and supplied with guns and gold in return for hitting the enemy base. Ho, however, moves his base to a more secure area and then plans to take out Casca at the US army camp. However, Casca takes out the assassins. He then plans to drop by chopper into Phang's territory and attack Ho's new base. Using a convenient storm as cover, Casca, Phang and the bandits attack, destroying the base. However, Ho and Troung survive. Back at base Casca meets Van who has just arrived and they plan the next move, aware that Troung has been ordered to their base to kill Casca once and for all, thanks to an informer. Casca, Van, Phang and some of his Kamserai take out Troung, torture him and find the location of Ho's new hideout. Casca is dropped by chopper right at the edge of Ho's base and goads the Vietcong commander and his men into chasing him through the jungle into a swamp, where he spills bags of blood into the waters. The swamp is tidal and with the tide come hundreds of sea crocodiles that go beserk and devour the hapless Vietcong soldiers. Ho manages to avoid being eaten and tries to escape the swamp, but seeing Casca standing there waiting for him drives him insane and he runs back into the swamp, right into the jaws of a crocodile. Casca bids farewell to Phang and goes with Van back to a friendly outpost, but just as they get there they are ambushed by a mortar crew and Casca is injured. He is then flown off to the field army hospital at Nha Trang. |

This novel immediately precedes the incidents that occur at the start of Casca #1: The Eternal Mercenary. This is a novel of revenge and as Barry Sadler fought in Vietnam during this period can be taken as being fairly accurate in detail. The sequences that describe the crocodiles attacking the VCong soldiers is horrific and, if this series ever makes it to TV or film, would be a sight to behold! The next novel in the timeline is Casca #20: Soldier of Gideon and takes place 3 years later (although Sadler mistakenly had him fighting the 1967 Six-Day War instead of the Yom Kippur War of '73). | ||||||||||||||
