Update: May 11, 2003
- Just started training again the past few weeks.
Sensei Thomas has a nice new dojo now and he also got his 3rd Dan from
the International Meibukan Goju-Ryu Karate Association (www.imgka.com)
a few months ago. He also held the 4th? annual
Cambridge Spring Karate Challenge, I came and helped with score
keeping and also got to tape the black black belt divisions and
the Meitatsu
Yagi seminar afterwards. I might put some clips up of
his son Akihiro Yagi performing the Meibukan kata Tenchi.
Master Yagi and his son also had a seminar at our club a few
weeks after and I was really lucky to participate. Didn't
do any filming or take any pictures of the seminar because I
wanted to concentrate on the training but I believe Sensei took
a few pictures, so I might get some from him to upload.
********************
This was the first martial arts
school I trained at. It was first called Don Warrener's
Martial Arts Academy and was part of Classic Martial Arts Canada
(CMAC) organization. After it left that organization the
school changed it's name. I also did Okinawan Kobudo for 2
years at the club, earned San-Kyu (Green Belt). We also
learned a bit of Jujitsu, Tai Chi and Escrima. Then, a few
months after I got my black belt in Karate (Summer 1999), the
school started switching to the more traditional Okinawan
Meibukan style of Goju Ryu Karate Do. My Sensei has been
training regularly with Sensei Les Johns (6th Dan?) who has traveled and trained in Okinawa
many times with Grandmaster Meitoku Yagi's eldest son, Meitatsu Yagi.
Currently,
I'm not actively training in Karate anymore, but I still train
at home. I will start going to classes again soon, I
really would like to continue with the Meibukan Goju style.

Update: May 11, 2003
- I went to the first legal and government sanctioned Amateur Muay Thai bout in
Ontario that was held at Bingemans Park in Kitchener a few weeks ago. I
taped pretty much the whole event (hot ring girls included) and
I'll probably upload the last bout and some other highlights of
the event. The bout was hosted by
Khan Phady, who is now the president of the newly formed
Canadian Amateur Muay Thai Association of Ontario (www.CAMTAO.com)
He also has his own website too (www.phadymuaythai.com)
and it says that he is teaching at the Waterloo Regional Boxing
Academy. It's not too far from me, so I might actually start training in Muay Thai
again. But I won't be able to do any contact fighting
until I get my damn braces out.
****************
I started Muay Thai in the
Summer of 1999 I think. I trained almost every Saturday
& Sunday for 2 hour classes. I really liked the style,
and I believe I learned a good portion of the fundamentals of
Muay Thai and it really helped my fighting skills. I had
to stop because I started getting too busy on the weekends, and
I was still training in Karate at the time also.

Started this because I decided
to join the YMCA with my sisters because we really needed to
work out more often. The martial arts classes come free
with the membership, so I decided to take Judo to improve my
lack of grappling skills. The classes are really fun, laid
back, and small. I get a more personal and individual
instruction most of the time with the black belt instructors.
I currently put my membership on hold for this month (July 2002)
to work, visit my sister and niece in Toronto more often, and
work on some film projects with my new digital camcorder. ^_^ |

I've been a fan of martial arts
tricks since about mid-2000. Got my first taste of it
while watching TSN and they were showing a reply of ESPN
coverage of the 1998 US Open with open creative/musical forms by
Jon Valera, Richard Brandon, David Douglas, and Kim Do Nguyen.
After seeing some of the moves they did I was amazed. Then
somehow I started surfing the net and found websites such as PlanetJubei.com,
Bilang.com, oX
Pasture, and ZeroGravity.
After visiting the websites regularly and downloading videos,
this summer (2002) I finally started practising a little. I'm really not very acrobatic, but so far my
hardest acrobatic tricks I can do is a 540 Tornado Kick and
Butterfly Kick (Wushu/Changquan style techniques). I'm
also starting to do to fight choregraphy, hopefully you'll see
some of my work soon. |

MARTIAL ARTS
I've been trying to get into Mixed
Martial Arts (MMA) and other full contact fighting competitions.
So far I've just been to one Amateur Pankration competition, hopefully
going again in October 2002. I also would like to get some Boxing,
Kickboxing, Full Contact Karate/Bare Knuckle (Kyokushin, Enshin, Shidokan,
etc.), and Muay Thai bouts. But it's hard to get fights in Ontario,
the laws and Ontario Athletics' Commissioner Ken Hayashi sucks!!!

Jo Chu Ge

Chu Geri Ge
These are also known as the
Okinawan Taikyoku katas (both are done in the “H?pattern).
These can me done doing Renzoku Kumite (2 person sparring) or
Kakomi Kumite (5 person sparring). They
are not really considered katas but training exercises.
You can also do these in different variations using any techniques,
strikes or blocks, but must be done doing a block, strike, than block
again.
Tenshi (Heaven and Earth)
Seiru (Blue Dragon)
Byakku (White Tiger)
Shujakku (Red Sparrow)
Genbu (Black Turtle)
Seiru and Byakku, Shujakku and
Genbu are mirror katas. Tenshi
is Fukyu I and II put together. They
all can be done with two people doing Renzoku Kumite.
These katas were developed by Meitoku Yagi in the late 80’s early
90’s, except for Fukyu I and II which were developed by Kauryo
Higashionna in the late 1800’s. People
say Meitoku Yagi worked on these kata with Chojun Miyagi before his death.
