My Little Pony History ŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻŻ In 1981, there was a toy released by Habro called "My Pretty Pony." This pony was made of hard plastic and stood about eleven inches tall. The next year, in 1982, a smaller pony was released in a softer plastic and in six colors. These ponies were the first ponies to be sold under the name "My Little Pony." They had flat feet and all had the same pose, the same one as the larger "My Pretty Pony." The only differences between them was their color, their hair color, their eye color, and their symbol on their rumps. The following year in 1983, more ponies and types of ponies were released. The new ponies came as unicorns, winged horses, sea horses, and rainbow ponies. All of the new ponies had concave hooves which was a change from the flat foot my little ponies of the year before. These first six ponies were avaiable for sale and were labled as "Collector's Ponies." However, they did not have the flat feet as they had the year before. Over the years, up to 1992, there were many, many more ponies made. Baby ponies, baby sea ponies, flutter ponies, so-soft ponies, princess ponies, teeny tiny ponies, petite ponies, and many more. These happy ponies even starred in a movie, several specials, and had their own televison series for a time. From 1993 to about 1997, My Little Ponies dissapeared. When they came back in 1997-98, they had changed completely. The once chubby My Little Ponies had all become anarexic. They had thin legs, thin bodies, and their heads, in my opinon, looked more like a pig than a horse. The only thing that remained the same was that these ponies were made by Hasbro, they had a rainbow for their logo [but even the position of that changed from an arc to a swoosh!], and they had that trademark symbol on their rump, and just like the old ponies their symbols matched their names. I am unsure of how long these ponies actually lasted in the market but they were not around for very long. I believe that their lack of resembeling the My Little Ponies of the 1980's made them less desireable to collectors. Then, in 2003, twenty years after the first official My Little Pony was released, the chubby ponies came back! As part of a 20th Anaversary Special, Hasbro released new ponies. The new My Little Ponies were chubby, short, and had the same adorable faces that had won the hearts of millions world-wide during the 1980's. The new ponies also had a special feature about them. On one of their legs they have a heart that is supposed to indicate where a magnet is. The magnet can be easily seen by the large 'circle' that says "My Little Pony" on it. Due to factory error, the heart is not always on the right foot on some of the ponies. As the year went on, there were new pony friends added to the list. There was even a new place for them to live; Celebration Castle [in the 1980's they lived at Dream Castle and Paradise Estate]. There were also places for the ponies to go; Celebration Salon, Cotton Candy Cafe, and Bloomin' Blossoms Flower Shop. A short animated movie was made about the ponies trying to suprise Kimono for her birthday. The next years for My Little Pony appear to be very bright. There are rumors that unicorn ponies will be released soon; and with the relaease of a pegasus pony in August of 2004 lets hope those rumors are right! There is al so talk of a CGI (Computer Generated Image) television series and a movie that will come to theaters, or video, soon. I do hope that the movie will have a new plot and not simply be a remake of the old My Little Pony movie that came out in the 1980's. Oh well, only time can tell and I cannot wait to see what is new! |
