Internet 101 | ||||
Welcome to Internet 101 page. It will explain Internet and E-mail terms for people who are new to the Internet. Also will be included on the second page of Internet 101 will be my experiences and tips for enjoyment of using Internet. Internet and E-mail Definistions: INTERNET: HyperText Markup Language (HTML) - a website/webpage code web designers uses to write websites in and format how the site should be displayed. Nowadays most people use website editor like Front Page to design or manage their websites. It is faster and more convenient. Website/webpage - page you are viewling right now and all over the Internet that is uploaded up to the server and is available for all to see on the Internet. Some people buy their right to have their own site up on the Net by having their domain end in .com and are registered with Network Solutions or other website registery. The dot com people who manage all the website addresses. Usually they have to pay to web server hosting such as ISPs to host their websites. Domain names - names that end in .com .net. org .edu are actually managed by dot com people like Network Solutions/ICANN -other domains ends in gov and mil is managed by the government. Web server - server that is connected to the Internet like a gateway. There are more than few million or so of these servers all over the world. Internet Service Provider (ISP) - people who run the servers and their only function is to provide people with a gateway to the Internet and provides E-mail service usually at a flat rate fee. There are many local ISPs all over, even there are national ones like Earthlink/Mindspring. Online services - companies who provide Internet access and E-mail and usually have their own E-mail clients. Juno and America Online are examples of online services that uses their own client E-mail program. Search Engine - many websites offer this so you can find data you want in less time. Search engines have a long way to go since they often give people results that is not related to what they are searching for. Usually the search engine put the stuff that you are looking for at the top of the list. Two good sites for searching information are ASK JEEVES which allows you to ask questions in English like query. You get the list of sites that you want in no time. :) Another one, (It is not a search engine) is About.com. About.com have about over 700 sites and is loaded with information on variety of topics. :) E-MAIL: E-mail client programs - program you use for sending and receiving E-mail. Example of E-mail client programs: Microsoft Outlook/Outlook Express, Eudora and Netscape Messenger. Juno has their own E-mail program and AOL does too. Carbon Copy (CC) - copy E-mail to all people who receive E-mail and is visible to everyone including those in the To: field and to those who receive E-mails from the sender. Blind Carbon Copy (BCC) blind copy people's E-mail address so other people who receive E-mail will not see E-mail address usually it will show as undisclosed recipients. Some people do it because spammers can pull off E-mail addresses, some people can do E-mail lookup and find out who you are if you are listed in a public directory. Some ISP spam filters sees as spam if you don't put address in To: fields. To do this just stick your email address in To: field and then put everyone in BCC field. Spam - unsolicted bulk E-mail that it sent to EVERYONE and usually contains stuff like get rich quick schemes, pyramid schemes, illegal stuff or link to porn sites. I HATE spam as much as next person but lately been getting 2 or 3 spams a day in my main email account. Usuallly you can block or filter out junk E-mail. NEVER REPLY TO A JUNK E-MAIL unless it is product ads and includes legit link and hit unsubscribe but don't unsubscribe from porn cuz they often give non valid link! It just tells the spammer that your E-mail address is active(confiming that is active). I should state here about filtering softwares they are not 100 percent fool proof and problems with these software is that they block out legitimate sites and e-mails. CHATROOM: Lurk - a person who log on and just watch the room they are in to get the idea of the conversation and how other chatters behave and the topic of conversation. Newbie - a person who is new to the Internet and chatrooms. Handle - an alias or identity a person uses instead of their real name for security reasons and for their own protection and privacy.
