Gifts

I emptied out the water from the bottom of that vase.
The flowers lasted quite a while standing in their place.
You know how much I loved them, they were such a thoughtful gift;
and I still smile in memory of how they gave me such a lift.
The blend of vibrant red around the gentle pink and green,
in time will be forgotten in the form that they were seen.
But in my mind, I'll always see you handing them to me;
for its the simple gesture of the giving gifts you see;
that kindles and keeps warm a heart, like coals amid a flame.
Yet somehow gifts are given that we cannot see or name.
Like, often you present one in the simple words you say.
A soft touch on a shoulder might make somebody's day.
You never know, the imprint that you leave might be the seed
to grow a smile and give someone that special touch they need.
A gift is something wonderful to cherish and to save;
but the best ones are the simple ones, you never knew you gave.
Dedicated to my daughter, Pam.
