"-What's wrong? He asked, catching his breath
-Nothing. Everything. This. I don't kknow"
Lucky sighed and let her go. He walked over to the sink and started to wash his dishes. It was the only thing he could do to prevent him from jumping on her right now.
"-You wanted to talk to me? He asked, his back turned from her
-I did. I've been wanting to talk to yoou for the past two years. Are you ready to hear my side of what happened?
-Elizabeth, let it be. It's in the pastt
-is it? Is it really? Is that why you still won't talk to Nikolas? Is that why you avoided me for the past two years?"
Lucky sighed and he hung on to the sink. The room was spinning around him, just like that night.
"-You have to turn the knife in the wound, don't you Elizabeth? How do you know I still don't talk to my brother? You guys keep in touch?
-Yes, we do. We decided we wouldn't lett what was left of our friendship be ruin by it. We lost everything that mattered to us that night Lucky. I lost the love of my life, he lost his only brother. We weren't to lose our only friend left in that mess.
-Glad to see he still respected you in tthe morning, he said, sarcastically."
Why did it still hurt so much? It happened a lifetime ago, he was another man. A man with hope and dreams. Now, he was an old man, a broken man, with nothing that kept him alive, no one to keep him warm at night, no one to come home to.
"-Lucky, Elizabeth reached out to touch him but stopped her movement, please let me explain.
-Ok. Lucky sighed, before sitting on hiis bed. Go ahead. I think I owe you this much"
Elizabeth sat down next to him and gently took his hand. She was waiting for him to try and pull it away, but he left it where she put them, on her thigh, but he was still looking at the floor.
"-That night, when we fought and you finally admitted out loud you thought I killed Hope --she lifted her hand when he tried to talk-- let me continue. You broke my heart beyond repair. I wanted to die, but I knew I couldn't, for Manny's sake. So I thought I could escape it all, at least for one night. I had heard about how alcohol can make you forget everything, your problems, the mess you made of your life, and I wanted that for myself. There was always tomorrow to come back to it. I was sitting at Jake's, pouting glass after glass of alcohol in me, I don't even remember what it was that I was drinking, when Nikolas showed up. We started talking, and one thing led to another. He told me how much he felt guilty since he was the one who gave me that horse, and I said I was the one who was foolish enough to get on. We were getting pretty drunk, and he admitted he was jealous of you, for finding the kind of love he wanted to have. And he admitted when he first met me, he had a crush on me. He said he wouldn't have admitted it, because I was a brat. He said he thought I was pretty and he reached out and touched my face. I said you were a fool to be letting me go and he said he agreed. You hadn't touch me in so long Lucky, I needed tenderness, understanding. I asked him if we could do something together, like rent a movie and cuddle, just to feel alive again. He said yes, and we went back to my house. We took a cab, none of us was in shape to drive. "
Elizabeth took a deep breath and looked at Lucky. He was still with her. He gently squeezed her hand to encourage her.
"-We were in my room, and we were watching the movie, his arm was around my shoulders. I was feeling good Lucky, I needed human contact so much, and you kept denying it to me. I'm the one who made the first move. I needed to feel normal, and at first he pushed me away. He said you were his brother and he wouldn't get me to cheat on you with his brother, but he was drunk, so was I and I insisted. He eventually gave in, and you know the rest. I know you knew all that, but I needed you to-- no, scratch that. I NEED you to know we didn't do it out of a mutual attraction. We did it because we were drunk and we both needed comfort. I never meant to cheat on you. It doesn't excuse it, it doesn't make it right, we screwed up and I am still paying for that. I just want you to know I have always loved you and I still do, from the bottom of my heart. I meant the vows we said in that church and I still means them. Everything I am is in love with you. Please forgive me Lucky, I didn't mean to hurt you. I'm not asking you to come back to me, I've made my bed, now I have to lie in it, but I wanna be your friend so bad. I need my best friend back.
-I think I need time Elizabeth, to let tthis sink in. Would you mind leaving me alone?
-Hey, this is your home. Thanks for lisstening Lucky"
She gently kissed him on the cheek and went home. She went in the kitchen, looking for Manny and tell the babysitter it was OK for her to go home now, but all she found was a note, saying they left for the movies half an hour ago and we stop at Mc Donald's on their way home and she hoped Elizabeth wouldn't mind. She didn't mind at all, that gave her time to be alone and sort out her feelings. She went upstairs to her room and put one of her favorite, all-time CD, Grease. She sat on her bed, listening to the music and sang with the words. She got to the song that made her think of Lucky, and she smiled. She was ready to sing louder but just before the song started, she heard a noise coming from her window and she saw Lucky come in. Without a word he walked to her bed and extended his hand to her. She took it, and he put his other arm around her waist. She put her head against his shoulder and did something she had never done before in front of him. She sang to his ear as they danced.
"Guess mine is not the first heart broken
My eyes are not the first to cry
I'm not the first to know there's
Just no getting over you
You know I'm just a fool who's willing
To sit around and wait for you
But baby can't you see there's nothing else for me to do
I'm hopelessly devoted to you
But now there's no where to hide
Since you pushed my love aside
I'm outta my head hopelessly devoted to you
Hopelessly devoted to you
Hopelessly devoted to you
My head is saying fool forget him
My heart is saying don't let go
Hold on to the end that's what I intend to do
I'm hopelessly devoted to you
But now there's no where to hide
Since you pushed my love aside
I'm outta my head hopelessly devoted to you
Hopelessly devoted to you
Hopelessly devoted to you"
By the end of the song Elizabeth felt something cold on his shirt and realized it was her own tears. It was the song "You're the one that I want" but they were still in each other's arms, even though they had stopped dancing.
"-Where do we stand Lucky? Friends? Acquaintances? Aunt of your favorite rugrat?
-How about, all of the above?
-Ok, I guess I can live with that, she aanswered, pouting
-Live with that? Elizabeth!
-I'm joking! Boy, it shows you work witth Taggert, can't take a joke anymore!
-Can't take a joke?"
Elizabeth saw the look in his eyes and knew what that meant, so she started to run. He ran after her and she got out of the room. Their steps down the stairs looked like a heard of Elephants running in the Hardy household. She ran pass the couch and into the kitchen. They were both out of breath as they were looking at each other on each side of the kitchen table. Lucky was blocking the only way out of the kitchen, as Elizabeth was turning her back at the patio door. Lucky fainted on one side and Elizabeth wanted to go the other but she saw his was coming fast her way. She quickly fell on her knees and walked under the table. She got up and the end and Lucky's hand nearly closed on the back of her shirt but she got out in time and ran up the stairs again. She was in the middle of them when he felt a hand closing on her ankle when she lost her balance. She screamed, laughed and turned around, her back laying on the stairs. She was out of breath from her run around the house, and her knees were hurting from hiding under the table.
"-Come on Lucky, we are not kids anymore to run up and down the stairs and hide under kitchen tables.
-Take it back, he answered, as he tickleed her side
-Lucky... the... stairs... are... hurtinng... me
-I don't care, take it back. He was lauughing as much as she was
-Ok, you... are... not... like... Taggerrt... at... all
-Thank you, he said, stopping the tickliing
-You are worst"
Elizabeth quickly ran up the stairs and in her room. She tried to close the door but Lucky put his foot and she screamed. She was trapped. Lucky was looking at her, making crab claws with his hand, a devilish smile on her face.
"-Please, no more tickling, I'll do anything you want
-Anything? He asked, close to her, puttting his hands on her hips, without moving them
-Anything, she answered laughing, you naame it"
Lucky took her mouth in a deep, passionate kiss.
"-Anything huh?
