Chapter 5

Elizabeth just stood there, in shock. What did that mean? It couldn’t be what she was thinking. It was impossible. Did he just ask her out? On a date? No, she just misunderstood.

"-Elizabeth? Lucky asked, concerned. He was ready for anything, but not a silent treatment

-Yeah, I’m here. Call me dumb, but I had the impression you were asking me out.

-I was. I mean if you want to.

-On a date?

-Yes, on a date. I mean, I know I said I didn’t want to, but I’m going crazy here. Seeing you with Brett, and not having time for me, that’s too much for my poor heart

-So you are saying you wouldn’t be asking me out if I didn’t spend time with Brett?"

Lucky’s mind was spinning so fast. This was not the direction he wanted the conversation to go. Everything that came out of his mouth was wrong and he was just putting his foot in his mouth.

"-Elizabeth that is not what I meant.

-What do you mean? First you didn’t even want to be my friend after you had learned Sarah was my sister, then you only wanted to be my friend, and now you are asking me out?

-Ok, just forget about it. I knew it was a bad idea in the first place, I shouldn’t have said anything, you just go back to Brett and I’ll see you around"

Before Elizabeth could say anything, he was gone. "Girl you are so stupid" She said to herself. That was her big problem. She always acted before she thought. Now, Lucky was mad at her after he finally did what she was waiting for him to do all along. To like her that way.

Elizabeth had to straighten things up tonight. She would go see him, and make him understand that she did want to go out with him, on a date. She decided to cut through the park. It was faster. She was walking fast, when she heard steps behind her. She checked and saw a man, so drunk he could barely stand on his feet.

"-Hey pretty lady, he said, his words all mushy, what are you doing alone out here at this time of night? Looking for a good time?

-Not really, she said, starting to walk again, but he took her arm. Let me go!

-I can show you a good time, come closer

-I said let me go!"

The man was closer to her, so close she could smell his breath. She was struggling for him to leave, but he was too strong. Elizabeth was beginning to be scared. Lucky had warned her about wandering in the park alone, at this time of night. Why didn’t she listen to him? Suddenly she heard in her back.

"-The lady asked you to let her go. I suggest you do.

-LUCKY!

-What if I don’t want to? Asked the drunk

-She was waiting for me, and I don’t plan on going home alone. So either you let her go, or I will make you.

-Ok, ok, you can have her, replied the drunk, pushing her in Lucky’s arms. She is not my type anyway, too bitchy"

Lucky made a move towards him, to bash his face in, when Elizabeth stopped him, saying to let him go. Lucky took her in his arms, holding her close. She was trembling. That was a close call. She would NEVER walk alone in the park AGAIN.

"-Are you okay? What are you doing here at this time of night?

-I am ok, she answered, I was going over to see you and I figured it would go faster if I cut through the park. What are you doing back here?

-Well, I was on my way to my room when I realized it was late and that you would be walking home alone. I decided to come back and get you home safe.

-I’m glad you did"

Lucky was caressing her hair, waiting for her to calm down and stop shaking. They were holding each other close, in the middle of the park, when Sarah and Nikolas walked by. Lucky felt Elizabeth stiffen in his arms and turned around to see why. When Nikolas saw his brother, his hand left Sarah’s. Lucky turned around to face them, and put his arm around Elizabeth’s shoulders, protectively. Sarah was looking mad, and Nikolas was uncomfortable.

"-Come on Elizabeth, I’ll walk you home"

Was all Lucky said, before turning around. Elizabeth didn’t feel like going home, because, from Sarah’s face, Liz knew that meant trouble for her. It almost looked as if her sister was jealous of the closeness between Lucky and Liz. They connected right away, from the very beginning. For the first time on her life, Elizabeth had a real, true friend. Sarah would NOT take that away from her, like she did everything else. Lucky was the only good thing in her life, and she didn’t want anyone to mess with that.

Lucky sat on the couch, while Elizabeth got something to drink. When she came back with the glasses she sat down, her right leg under her, facing Lucky. She thanked him for the thousandth time because he saved her from the guy in the park. Lucky took her hand and told her never to do that again. After what happened to the girl on the last valentine’s day, he didn’t want her to go through the same thing. Next time he might not get there on time.

"-Don’t worry, I’m not stupid enough to do the same thing twice!"

She answered with a smile. Lucky was looking uncomfortable, always changing places. Elizabeth was looking at him, when she realized why he was not able to find a position. He was sitting on her diary! She left it downstairs after she was ready to go to Luke’s. She took it away from his hand. He had found it and was looking at the cover. When he felt her pulling it, he made possible for him to at least read what was written on it. A big smile came on his face after he did. Lizzie+Lucky with a heart around it.

"-Well, well, well, isn’t that interesting! He said, while she blushed

-Don’t get your head blown up, this was before I got to know you! She said

-Yeah, right! You love me and you know it"

Lucky was laughing, when he received her fist on his shoulder. He hit her back and they started fighting. He was stronger than her, but she managed to give him a few good punches. She was laying on her back, he was on top of her, on his knees, tickling her when Sarah walked in the door. Elizabeth was telling him to stop, when they heard Sarah cough. Lucky turned his head, and Elizabeth lifted hers. While he wasn’t looking at her, Liz punched him in the stomach getting him to sit down, finally letting her catch her breath.

"-Hi Sarah! Lucky said with a big smile

-Hi Sarah, Liz repeated, smiling too

-Hi guys, Sarah answered, while sitting down next to Lucky"

Lucky got closer to Liz, to give Sarah some space. Feeling Elizabeth tensing up since her sister got home, Lucky took her hand in his, and put them on his thigh. He didn’t have feelings for Sarah anymore, not even friendship. Sure he was grateful for everything she did when he was at odd with his parents, but that was all in the past now. The only person important to him now was Elizabeth. He just didn’t know it yet. Or just didn’t want to admit it. Sarah saw the little display of affection Lucky gave Elizabeth and that was driving her crazy. Sure, she was happy with Nikolas, but she didn’t want Elizabeth to have Lucky either. He could be with anyone, she didn’t care. Anyone but her. Elizabeth was everything Sarah wanted to be. She was pretty, funny, easy going. Even Lucky forgot Sarah over Liz. Everyone liked Liz better. Always. Well this time, Elizabeth wouldn’t win. Lucky would not be her ultimate victory.

They chatted for a while, when Sarah said she would go up to her room. She was tired. Lucky looked at the time and jumped! It was way passed midnight. Time for him to get home before Elizabeth’s grandmother had a cow. Granted she was still at the hospital, but she would kill him if she found out.

He got up and Elizabeth walked him out. She had her arms around her waist, she was freezing. Lucky rubbed her shoulders, telling her to get inside before she caught a cold. Elizabeth got on the top of her feet and kissed him gently. He was so sweet. Even after she broke his heart, he was still caring about her not to get sick. Lucky answered to her kiss by getting closer to her. In his arms, she was warm and she never wanted to leave them. He finally broke the kiss, and went on his way, saying he would call her the next day. Elizabeth fell asleep with a smile on her face.

Lucky was lying on his bed, unable to sleep. Elizabeth was on his mind. How her body was a perfect match for his, like they were made to complete each other. Even though she kissed him, it didn’t mean she wanted to go on a date with him. That was making him crazy, to know that she was probably kissing Brett like that too.

That’s it! He thought, tomorrow is another day, but not a good one for Brett. Elizabeth would be with him by the end of the day, whether she liked it or not!
