CHAPTER 17

A few seconds after the kiss had started, Alexis pulled away, out of breath. The intensity of the kiss was too overwhelming for her to even try and comprehend it. "Luke," she started, but stopped, trying unsuccessfully to get his attention to what she was saying, as he was fixating on her lips and nothing else "Luke," she said again, and this time his eyes met hers. "What was that about?"

"Something I've wanted to do, I think, ever since I met you," Luke answered truthfully. "I've always wondered what it would be like to kiss you, to try and be enflamed by that fire inside of you"

Alexis stared at him for the longest time, before she finally took it upon herself to put a stop to the insane beating of her heart by leaving the hospital room. "I'll be back tomorrow," she said quietly, before she stood up and walked to the door.

"Alexis?" Luke asked and ran his hand through his short, white hair while waiting for her to turn around and look at him. He sighed when her eyes finally met his. "Did something--- everything's changed between us, hasn't it?" he asked quietly.

"I sure hope so," Alexis answered with a teasing smile before she opened the door and left the room, leaving him to wonder what she had meant by those 4 little words. He didn't have time to wonder for very long though, as his door opened again and Laura walked in. "Well, hello there," Luke said sweetly and smiled sarcastically. "Came to make sure I didn't croak?"

"Please don't start. I came to make sure that you are gonna be all right," Laura said before she made her way to his bed. "You know, don't you?" she asked quietly, reading the disgust in his eyes.

"You mean do I know about how you tore my heart from my chest when you let me raise and love the spawn of the devil as my own?" Luke answered hastily and Laura's eye became wide open.

"You loved Lucky," Laura said softly, reaching for his hand but Luke yanked it away. "You loved him more than any father ever loved his son. Does it really matter that he wasn't biologically yours, Luke?"

"No, it doesn't," Luke admitted quietly. "It wouldn't have mattered if you told me the truth, Laura. I would've loved Lucky, or would it have been Stefan Junior?" he asked sarcastically. "I would've loved him, raised him, and protected him as my own. But," Luke continued when he saw that she was about to talk, "The fact is, you didn't tell me. Just like you didn't tell me about how you had a son when you were in captivity and how you didn't tell me that son was mine when you saw that I was ready to tear the kid's heart out. You didn't tell me that Lucky wasn't mine when you saw how desperate I was after he allegedly died, and you surely didn't tell me that he wasn't mine when Nikolas' paternity came out and Lucky stood here, asking you if there was anything else that would come out in the open."

"I'm sorry, Luke," Laura said and wiped the tears from her cheeks "At that time, it seemed to me like the only solution I had, the right thing to do. I gave your son to Stefan. I knew that he always thought Nikolas was his, so I thought it would be the right thing to do to give you his son, since you wouldn't be able to raise yours."

"I would've been able to raise mine, Laura, because I would've gone back for Nikolas. I wouldn't have let him grow up on that Island, thinking that his own mother hated him, and that's why she had left him. He wouldn't have believed that he was the son of a prince. He would've known that he was the son of a full fledged American, and he would've been raised as such. He would've been raised with his brother, and, later on, with his baby sister. You denied him all of that, Laura. You denied him the truth about who he is, and for that, I can never forgive you"

"Luke, please, don't say that. I've forgiven everything you've done, why can't you do the same?" Laura asked desperately. She had lost Stefan, and now she was trying to solve whatever was left of her marriage to Luke.

"Because I can't trust you. At least you knew about the things you forgave me I was always honest with you. I've never lied to you, or disappointed you. You have, several times. Why Laura? Was I so awful to you that you hated me that much?"

"I don't hate you, I love you," Laura cried and she reached for his hand. Luke, once again, yanked it away

"You don't know what love is, Laura. Love means trust, and I don't trust you. Love means honesty, and you haven't been honest a day in your life. Love means truth, and you don't even know the meaning of the word. It's over. For good, Laura, nothing will change that. And now, I want you to go. It hurts too much to look at you."

When she saw he was serious, Laura slowly got up and walked to the door. She put her hand on the handle, but she didn't have the courage to open it. Luke gave it to her when he spoke again.

"I will ask Alexis to petition for a court order for a paternity test on both Lucky and Lulu. You better pray to your God that you lied about her father, like you lied to both of your sons, because if the test shows that she is my daughter, you are gonna lose her like you lost everything else. I'm gonna take her away from you, to a place where your lies won't destroy her life liked they did to your other children"

"You will never have my daughter!" Laura screamed in desperation, tears running down her face. "She's all I have left!"

Luke just turned his head around, unwilling to show Laura how much she still affected him. Unwilling to show her how much he still loved her.

****************

"I'll be in the kitchen," Nikolas said, feeling that¨Stefan really needed to talk to Lucky. "Call me if you need anything."

"Sit down," Lucky said, showing Stefan the chair Nikolas had just left. "What do you want to talk to me about?"

"She isn't my mother," Lucky replied. "I don't want to have anything to do with her."

"All right, fair enough," Stefan agreed and rephrased his sentence. "I saw Laura, right before I came here. She didn't deny the fact that she was pregnant when she left the island, nor did she deny the fact that you are my son"

"But did she confirm it?" Lucky asked, clasping his hands together to prevent them from shaking.

"Not in so many words, but she did say that it shouldn't have mattered since I had Luke's son with me," Stefan said, remembering his bitter fight with Laura. "I do not care about the why she did it, Lucky. I do not care about her, at all. I did not come here to talk about Laura, I came here to talk about us"

"There is no us," Lucky replied sharply. "I am not a Cassadine. You may be my father, but I will never be a part of your family"

"You might not want to be a part of it, but you are. You are my son, and I would like to finally have a chance to get to know you. I want us to forget about our last names, and get to know each other. That is why I am here."

"What about what *I* want, Father?" Lucky asked bitterly. "Did you stop and think about what this might be doing to Luke? He's sick, he's in the hospital, he might die, and all you care about is replacing Nikolas with me!"

"That is not true. Now, Lucky, I will not insult your intelligence by telling you that I care about what happens to Luke Spencer, because I don't. But I have never tried to kill him, nor do I wish any physical harm to come to him"

"That's bull!" Lucky answered sharply. "Never doing any harm and making a plan to do harm but never having the guts to act on it are two different things!" Lucky answered and saw Stefan's face pale as he remembered what Lucky was talking about. "I know all about it, Stefan."

"No one knew," Stefan answered. "As for ever having the guts to do it, there is a difference in wishing someone was dead, and actually killing him. A difference my mother never understood when she tried to get me to act on my hatred for Luke." Finally, the truth fell upon Stefan. "You were with her, were you not? All the months everyone grieved for you, Helena had you"

Lucky didn't confirm nor deny it. He just started at his father with such intensity that Stefan couldn't look in his eyes any longer. Stefan looked down, seeing that his hand was only a few inches away from Lucky's, and he slowly reached out to cover the young man's hand with his own. Lucky yanked it away with such force that Stefan's eyes snapped back to his son's. Lucky's baby blue eyes were shinning with unshed tears that were threatening to fall on down his cheeks.

"She hated me," Stefan said after he cleared his throat, "she hated me because I fought her. With every beat of my heart, every time she would walk into my room, I would fight her. That is why she hated me, and that is why she always had me beaten, and not Stavros. Because he loved it. He was as sick as she was, and she always thought that I was like them, and the fact that I was not, and the fact that I had to cry myself to sleep, was only a reminder of how weak I truly was," Stefan almost whispered, wiping his own tears as he told Lucky how he went through the same hell Lucky did when he was in her captivity. "She did the same to you, too. I see it in your eyes," he whispered. "But I know how to rise above it, I finally figured out how to destroy her, once and for all, but I will need my son's help."
