CHAPTER 19

Lucky was by Jeremy's bed, sitting on a chair. He had big, dark bags under his eyes, like he hadn't slept in weeks. It only had been 5 days. 5 days since Jeremy was hurt in the explosion of their house. 5 days since he was admitted to the hospital, with tubes plugged everywhere on him, a respirator to help him breathe, his legs in a cast, his head banded. 5 days since the world stopped turning for Lucky. 5 days since Elizabeth died.

She was inside when their home exploded. She pushed Jeremy away so he wouldn't be hurt, but she and Sarah didn't get out on time. The house fell on them, killing the both of them instantly. Their memorial was two days ago, but Lucky wasn't able to attend. He just wasn't ready to say goodbye yet. He would never be able to say goodbye to Elizabeth. If it wasn't for Jeremy, Lucky would have joined her, but he had to be strong and go on, for their son. But don't ask him to say goodbye.

Lucky started to cry again, holding the little hand in his. Would the tears ever stop running? One day, would he be able to think about Elizabeth without feeling the moist of his pain on his cheeks? One day he would, that would be the day he wouldn't feel anything anymore, the day he died.

"-Lucky? Can I come in?"

He looked up and saw Nikolas, at the door. The oldest brother was dying to see Lucky in so much pain. You could see in his face how much he was hurting. But the worst thing was his eyes. The twinkle everyone loved so much was gone. Nikolas remembered when Lucky told him he told Elizabeth his eyes didn't twinkle when she was not around, and she didn't believe him. Nikolas didn't either at the time. He sure did now.

"-Yeah man, come in, Jeremy would love to visit with you. He loves you, you know

-Yeah I do, and I love him too. I'm nott going to ask you how you are holding up, that would be a stupid question.

-I'll be OK, I just need time. How's moom?

-She's OK. I saw Mrs. Hardy and Mrs. Weebber, they are outside but afraid to come in. Everyone is worried sick you know?

-Yeah I do, but Jeremy's a Spencer, he'lll pull through. I have to get my act together before he comes to. I don't want him to see me that way."

Nikolas put his hand on his brother's shoulder, as sobs were taking Lucky again. The truth was, he wasn't OK, he will never be again. How could he be? His reason for living, for breathing, was taken away from him. Why go on? He finally understood everything Elizabeth went through after her rape, how her world crumbled and she couldn't even get out of bed in the morning. Lucky didn't eat anything, hadn't changed clothes or taken a shower since Jeremy got admitted at General Hospital. Never once did he leave his side. He didn't even want to. The only time he got up was to go to the bathroom, or take a sip of water.

Why didn't they stay in California, or on the run? Why did they have to come back here? Didn't they learned their lesson when Helena kidnapped Jeremy all those months ago? Their confidence got him to lose the love of his life, it got him to lose his heart and soul. Lucky told Helena that if she ever came near him again, or hurt just a hair of his head, he would make her pay.

"-Nikolas, I gotta go, Lucky said, opening the door"

He came face to face with Audrey and Elizabeth's mom. When the women saw him, they took him in their arms, and Lucky had to fight the tears that were coming down his face.

"-Mrs. Hardy, Mrs. Webber, I have to go for a while, would you mind staying with him until I come back? Lucky asked

-Of course not Lucky, said Audrey"

Nikolas followed Lucky from afar. Something in his eyes Nikolas didn't like, and the way he got up so suddenly. His brother was up to no good, and he wanted to be able to stop him before Lucky did anything stupid.

Helena was having diner by herself on her yatch. Ari had the night off, and so did everyone else. She was alone with the cook on the big boat. The door opened with a bang and she saw Lucky walking really fast towards her, the gun in his hand, pointing it at her head.

"-Remember last time I was here, I made you a promise. I'm here to make good on it. He said

-Lucky don't!"

Lucky turned around, only to see Nikolas in the doorway, out of breath. Helena looked terrified, and Lucky smiled for the first time since the accident.

"-You're scared aren't you? Said Lucky, maybe you will understand what must have been running in Elizabeth's mind just before she died.

-Lucky, she is not worth throwing your llife away. Said Nikolas. You don't wanna do this.

-Watch me! Said Lucky

-Lucky, listen to me, Jeremy needs you. If you do this, you will go to jail, and Jeremy will be alone again.

-If you keep your mouth shut, no one willl know about it.

-I can't do that, I'm sorry. If you do it, I'll go to the police myself, and, to stop me, you'll have to shoot me too

-I can do it Nikolas"

Lucky looked at Nikolas, and smiled. For the first time in ages, Nikolas was actually scared of his brother. This time, it wasn't a mascarade. The gun was loaded.

"-Nikolas, go home. Said Lucky, no one wants to watch someone die. And I will get away with it, Spencers get away with everything, just ask my father. Now GO!"

Nikolas left, he didn't know what else to do. He didn't want Lucky to do something stupid, but he didn't want to die either, and Lucky was looking serious when he said he could do it.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Lucky was on the chair by Jeremy's bed, watching his son's chest go up and down in an hypnotic rhythm. The beeps from his machine was playing a big role in the state he was in, too. Suddenly the door opened and Nikolas came in. Without saying anything he took the other chair in the room and sat on the left side of the bed, while Lucky was on the right. The two guys only looked at each other, in silence, wondering when the other wouldn't take it anymore and say something. An hour passed with them, just staring at each other.
"-Lucky, you'll never guess what happened! Luke said as he walked in. Oh hi Nikolas
-What dad? Asked lucky, exhausted
-Helena was found dead last night, on heer boat. One bullet in the head. There was no weapon on the site of the crime, no incriminating evidence, no witness, but 100 of suspects."
At the same time, Lucky and Nikolas exchanged a silent conversation with their eyes. The hospital room door opened, and Mac came in.
"-Sorry to come here Lucky, but I need you to come with me down to the station. You too Luke.
-Wait, said Nikolas, why?
-Because they are both suspects in your grandmother's murder. Said Mac. Now, either they cooperate and come with me, or I'll have them booked with handcuffs. Either way, I don't care. What will it be?
-I'll go with you, said Lucky. Nikolas,, can you stay with Jeremy?
-This is ridiculous, said Luke, I was att the club all night, as my employees, they will tell you. And besides, if I did kill the old vampire, she'd had suffer a lot more than a bullet in the head.
-OK Luke, I don't need you then, but I wwill definitely check that alibi. Lucky? I hate to do this at a time like this, but I will if I have to. Do I need to read you your rights?
-No Mac, I'll go, said Lucky, getting upp."
Nikolas kept looking at Lucky, then Jeremy, then back to Lucky.
"-Commissioner, wait please. Lucky was with me last night. I took him home and forced him to bathe and change. I forced him to eat something and take a nap. You can ask Mrs. Lansburry, she'll tell you the same thing.
-Nikolas, are you telling me you are guaaranteeing your brother's whereabouts last night?
-Yes I am, said Nikolas.
-Very well then, said Mac, sorry about aall of this. I guess Helena was killed by someone who hated her more than you did guys."
Mac left soon after, and Lucky sat down again. Luke left some times later, and Lucky was alone with Nikolas again.
"-Why? You said you would tell on me as soon as you got the chance
-Lucky, you are my brother and I love yoou. You did what you thought you had to do for Elizabeth and Jeremy. I know you, and I know this will be eating you alive. Jeremy needs you, and you need him. Just forget about what you did last night. I will stick to my story, so as long as you do too, your secret is safe with me, forever."
Lucky got on his brother's side and took him in his arms, finally feeling the world lifted off of his shoulders, as tears of pain and relief stroll down his face. Still he did a terrible thing, and he'd have to live with it for the rest of his life, but at least he'd live it with Jeremy.
Something Bobbie said to him last year, when he confronted her about Laura's rape, came back to him at that very moment;
"-We all go through life with certain illusions about the lines we will never crossed and the things we will never do. When Luke was your age he knew as surely as you do right now, that he would never rape a woman. But time proved him wrong. He had to carry that knowledge inside of him, the fear of what he is capable of"
Lucky didn't understand the meaning of that at the time, but he sure as hell did now. A week ago, Lucky knew he would never kill someone, no matter what. Now, like his father, he had to go through life with the fear of what he was capable of, to protect his family. He was really his father's son.
